Newsletter No 35, 14 November 2018

Kia ora,

What an excellent week we had last week. The Athletic Sports went very well. Thank you to Lorna Dobson and everyone for their support and help with this day. We were able to share a celebratory morning tea with Laura Phipps (Rm14) as she went on leave to prepare for her wedding day on Saturday. I hope it went well, Laura and Josh. Laura sent some photos of her wedding day and she looks absolutely stunning.

The Grandparents’ Day was a huge success. Thank you Bernie Hall and all those who made sure the day went so well. The children’s singing in Mass was fantastic, the shared morning tea in classrooms was great, the concert was the best ever. What talent we have in our school and isn’t it great to see our students showing this off. The day ended well with the Holiday Book Draw and the House Relays. We received some awesome feedback from grandparents/parents who attended the morning.Thank you all for coming.

Another busy week this week. Totara team has three swimming instructors from Swim Rotorua and Rotorua Lakes Swim working with them on the Making the Difference Water Safety Programme. We have the same instructors working with us as last year – Jessica Gordon, Jack Weston and joining them this year is Tara Watt. All three are very competent and well qualified. We are very fortunate indeed. Monica Moore who is the writer of our school production, Noah and the Ark, is in our school to help with the production tomorrow, Thursday.

Yesterday our teachers went on strike and I have to say the decision to do so was not taken lightly. We appreciate that it may be inconvenient for families, however, the benefits of supporting teachers and principals in our fight for proper resourcing of your child’s education is appreciated.

Have a good week.

David Macmillan, Principal.

To St Mary’s School Community,
For the last two years our wonderful school and church community have supported Angel Tree, which is a branch of the Prison Fellowship of New Zealand (PFNZ), a Christian charitable organisation that was founded in NZ over 40 years ago. For the last 18 years, PFNZ and Angel Tree have been making a difference at Christmas for children who have a parent/grandparent in prison. Last year nearly 4000 children benefitted nation wide and St Mary’s helped by supporting children in Rotorua.

This is how it works – Angel Tree buys presents for children on behalf of the parent/grandparent who is in prison. Gifts are $25.00 each and next week a Christmas tree will be in the school office foyer. On the tree will be Angel Tree tags that have a child’s name, age and a present suggestion from their caregivers. Please support Angel Tree by taking a tag and writing your name next to the child’s name on the list. The list will be next to the tree in the foyer. Please buy a present and bring it back to the school Christmas tree UNWRAPPED and with the tag attached by Monday 3rd of December. Donations of wrapping paper are also gratefully appreciated.

If you can’t get to the office to pick a tag, please text me and I will put one in a sealed envelope for your child to bring home. Rachel Schuster 0274461351.

Thank you for supporting Angel Tree and children in our Rotorua community.
