Newsletter No 17, 13 June 2018.

Kia Ora,

I was very proud of our 41 students who were confirmed and made their First Holy Communion over the weekend. It was a magnificent time and our students looked stunning on these very special days. Bishop Steve was very good with the children and gave them some key messages during his chat/sermon with them about what it means being a member of the Catholic Team. The children have been preparing for receiving these sacraments for several months and there have been many adults from school and the parish who have been responsible for preparing the students. Thanks to them and also to the many parents who set up the dining areas for the feast after the Masses and the tidy up after. Last week Jmarie Riini was left off our list of students making their First Holy Communion last weekend. My apologies to you Jmarie.

Thank you to the parents/whanau who joined us for our Sacred Heart Mass. It was fantastic to see our little year ones get up and lead the prayers. I also enjoy hearing our children sing at our Masses.

Congratulations to Lucy Gaston, Kyle Hall, Harrison McLeod and Tara Ronayne, who qualified for and performed very well in the BOP semi finals for the EPro 8 Challenge 2 weeks ago. Well done!

This Friday a group of gymnasts are competing in an event in Te Puke and next Tuesday we have a team of athletes running in the Central Bay of Plenty Cross Country event at Kaharoa School. I wish all our students all the best.

Please keep Tuesday 19 June free for our annual cultural dinner. It is always a great affair. It is ‘bring a plate of food for a shared dinner’. It is helpful if you also could bring a serving utensil for your dish. There is always a wonderful variety of food at this great evening. It starts at 5.30pm and it is usually all over by 7.00pm. Everyone is welcome. It should be an awesome night.

I would like to invite Filipino Families to a parent meeting to discuss student achievement, aspirations for your children and the Graduate Profile. The meeting will take place this Wednesday 13th June at 3.15pm in Room 15 and should last around 30-45 minutes.

We also intend having a meeting for our Indian families two weeks later on Wednesday June 27th at 3.15pm (change of time) in Room 15.

With the departure of our sports’ coordinator Trudy James in a fortnight, we are looking for a new sports coordinator. If you would like to apply for the position please send your CV, with a covering letter to If you would like a copy of the job description you can contact Dorothy. Applications close Monday June 18th at 12 Noon.

School photos are scheduled for Friday 22nd June and information/envelopes have been sent home with your child. Please do not leave the ordering of these photos to the last minute. Orders must be with the school office by Wednesday 20 June. Last year we had lots of parents bringing their envelopes in on the day. The organisation on the day is already hectic enough without having to contend with a large number of late orders.

Kate Keaney, Sheryl Todd, Bernie Hall, Katherine Smith, Deacon Mike and I are attending the NZ Catholic Education Convention in Wellington this week. It will be a great opportunity to meet other professionals and hear many international and local speakers.

Yesterday you should have received a letter regarding our teachers attending a union meeting. On Thursday 28th June, the teachers from this school will be attending a NZEI Te Riu Roa paid union meeting regarding the Kua Tae Te Wā - It’s Time campaign. The meetings will allow our teachers to discuss how the Ministry of Education has responded to changes that the union is seeking.
The teachers need to leave school at the end of lunchtime in order to get to their union meeting which starts at 2pm.
I strongly encourage all our parents to make arrangements to pick up their child(ren) from school by 1.30pm on Thursday 28 June. If, for any reason, you are unable to do so, then you need to advise us please.

Contact the school office: 3481 701
Thank you for your support with this.

It is the start of Matariki next week. We have lots of fun activities throughout next week.
Enjoy your week.

David Macmillan, Principal.

From Our Director of Religious Studies:

Hello Everyone,

Congratulations to all our students who made their Sacraments over the weekend. Special mention to J-Marie Rinni - sorry I missed reading your name J-Marie! Well done and all the best. Classes are currently focussing on the Sacraments, so this is a great connection for them. I have had an opportunity to view Religious Education in our classrooms. It is great to see that RE is being delivered enthusiastically by Teachers who follow the RE curriculum. The variety in lessons is also good to see, book work, digital work, pair and group activities, music and art and most of all connections to the learning objectives of the current strand. This week some of us will be attending the NZ Catholic Convention in Wellington. Last Friday we celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart. It is wonderful to see and hear students reflect and state what the Sacred Heart is about. Please do ask your child!
Have a good week.
