Newsletter No 07 20 March 2019

Kia Ora,

New Zealand was certainly rocked by the horrifying event in Christchurch last Friday. I know that you will join me in sending our prayers and condolences to all those who have been affected by this despicable act of hatred. We stand in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters during this tragic time and pray for peace. On Monday morning, as a school we came together to pray for those who have been affected by this attack.

On a much brighter note, I have been lucky enough to be part of the five Year 5 and 6 camps over the last eight days at Horohoro’s Kearoa Marae. What a wonderful place to have a camp. As each class arrived, we were warmly welcomed onto the Marae by the staff and students of Horohoro School. Our students have had an awesome time really getting to know each other as class members. The students have had a varied programme of Maori cultural based activities, team building, swimming, conservation games and a host of other activities. The camps have been excellent due to great organisation from the Totara team teachers and the parents who have generously given up their time to help on camps. Adults have worked tirelessly while at camp. You have been fantastic; thank you again.

At the moment we have Bernie Volschenk and Harold from Life Education in our school. Bernie is covering a number of different themes with the classes. Ask your child what his or her class has been doing in the mobile classroom.

This Friday we will be having the holiday reading draw from the Christmas Holidays. If your child’s log is still at home, please make sure that they bring it in tomorrow morning.

Our Year 3 & 4’s have been having swimming lessons with Henk Gruepink and it is pleasing to see the progress the students have made. I am looking forward to seeing our students involved in the swimming sports at the end of the month.

Kind regards,
David Macmillan, Principal.

We pray for those in Christchurch and indeed all over NZ. Although often lost in grief and overwhelmed by fear and anger, we hear your call to firmer faith and deeper trust. In the midst of doubt and fear you call us to be a people of prayer.

Almighty and ever-faithful God, in a world of despair, you call us to be a people of hope. When we are cast down or dismayed, keep your Spirit alive in us. Grant us faith to look forward with confidence to that day when the whole world will be drawn into willing obedience to your reign and people will come from east and west, and from north and south, to sit at table in your kingdom, to be one. Amen.

RICE DAY 26th March for Caritas.

On Tuesday 26th we have our school Rice Day. Students are expected to eat rice for lunch-NO LUNCH orders on this day. Students are to bring a spoon/fork and a bowl for their rice. We hope to eat lunch under the trees as a whole school that day. The focus is to remember that for many people around the world including in South Sudan, rice is the main or only meal of the day. It is a learning experience for our students.
Morning tea is as usual on this day. If there are any dietary issues that this may have for your child please advise your child's teacher.
Helpers will be needed and any rice cookers we can borrow too please. Please let your child's teacher know or email Bernie Hall if you can assist.

All students are to bring a gold coin donation for Caritas on this day .
