Newsletter No 39 11 December 2019

Hello Everyone,

This coming Friday, we have our End of Year Mass at 9am. This is an opportunity to be together celebrating the Eucharist, also to reflect on the year’s achievements, farewell our Year 6 students and award major prizes. You are all welcome to join us.

Tryathlon Day is tomorrow. Totara and Kahikatea will be participating from 11.00am and Kakano, Manuka at 1.30pm. Children can ride trikes, three wheelers and bikes, swim in the school pool and run around a course. We need parents to help with marshalling etc, so if you can help please let your child’s teacher know or email Lorna on

On Wednesday 18 December at 9.00 am we will hold our school prize-giving in the school hall. You are very welcome to attend. If your child is receiving an award on Wednesday you will receive a notification with your child’s report. Reports will be sent home this Friday. I hope you all enjoy discussing your children’s progress with them. I was very pleased with the reports this year. The children have done particularly well.

Friday 20th December we will commission our Year 6 students at a final assembly at 11.00 am in the school hall. Everyone is invited to attend.

School finishes at 12 Noon. Please ensure you pick up your child promptly.

Our Christmas decorations are up around the school. I invite children to write to Santa Claus again this year and for those children who write a letter, they will get a reply from him. Santa’s letterboxes will be scattered around the school again. Children’s younger brothers and sisters can write a letter and big brothers and sisters can drop the letter in Santa’s mailbox.

We had a lovely Advent Liturgy on Thursday, thanks to Bernie Hall and Kakano. Kakano also performed the Nativity play on Friday and Bishop Steve was able to be there and watch it. Like all of us, I am sure he was very impressed. Last Thursday we had an awesome ‘Thank you Coaches’ evening. Thanks to those who were able to make it to the event and a big thanks to Leanne for organising the event. It was well enjoyed by those in attendance. Again, thanks for the fantastic support we get from you with coaching and managing.

Our children had their Student Celebration Conferences with their parents over the week. It was great to see you come in and see what your child had done this year.

Last night a number of our flippa ball teams battled it out in the flippaball finals. Three of our teams made it to the finals. Lions won the Junior Championships final. Thanks to the coaches and parents who helped with the teams.

Fantails touch team played in a runners up final last night and won. Congratulations. All the best to other touch teams playing tonight.

Our Year 6s were on retreat on Friday and they had a great day. The Year 5s were involved in a Leadership day at the same time. Both events were very successful.

Early next week your child will bring home information about reading over the holidays. Children must READ, READ, READ during their time away from school. Some children’s progress can go backwards if they do not continue to read over the holidays. Please keep your child reading. Books also make great Christmas gifts! There will be a lucky draw again when the children return in Term 1. Lots of summer prizes: inflatable swim toys, boogie boards, fishing rod, sports equipment, books and many other prizes.

Once again we have produced a school magazine. It is a fantastic record of the year. The price is $5.00 and it is certainly good value. Thank you to Ricoh Copiers who sponsor this book. The magazine will be available next week but you must pre-order from the school office if you want a copy. Some of our children missed out on getting one in previous years, so get your order in to avoid disappointment.

Have a lovely week
David Macmillan, Principal.

The first day all students will attend classes at St Mary's in 2020 will be on Friday 7 February. Each student and a family member is invited to attend a 20 min appointment with their 2020 class teacher on either Tuesday 4 February or Wednesday 5 February. Appointment slots will be available from 8.30am - 4.50pm both days. Appointments will be able to be made on the School Interview website - booking details will follow next week.

As we prepare for the coming of Christ;
May the joy of Christ present be with us
As we prepare to spend time
with family and friends;
May the awe of Christ's presence
Envelop us
As we remember those less
fortunate than ourselves,
the lonely, the hurt;
May we be the presence of Christ
that nourishes. Amen
