Newsletter No 36 20 November 2019

Kia ora,

Thank you to the parents of Year 2 students who came to the e-Learning Information Evening last week. There was an excellent turnout. Thanks Anne Cato and Bevan James for facilitating the meeting. I think those of you who were present would agree that the meeting was helpful.

On Friday we had a Teacher Only Day. The day was productive for staff. A number of us also attended a first-aid course during the day.

Yesterday our Athletic Team competed in the Inter-Schools’ Competition. All our athletes performed well. Official results will be made available once they are to hand.

Thanks to Leanne Rankin our Sports’ Coordinator who managed the team and Sophie Macmillan who helped with the High Jump competition and all the parents who helped get students to the right spot at the right time.

Tara Watt and her team from Swim Rotorua are running the 'Making the Difference' water safety programme in our school again this term. They are teaching swimming with our year 3 to 6 students. We are grateful for the help we get from these coaches. Our children are looking confident in the water.

On Friday 29th November, forty of our Kapa haka group are involved in the Kapa haka festival. They have been practising for a long time now under the tutelage of Kori Tini. I hope they are enjoying practising for the big night.

The Christmas Parade is only two weeks away. Here are some details for you; a notice with more details will be sent home this week. It will be great to have a Catholic presence in the parade.

This year the Christmas Parade Rotorua Trust is looking forward to creating a uniquely Rotorua event with a new location, the Rotorua Government Gardens. The parade starts at 11am by the Energy Event Centre and will make its way around the gardens. After the parade there will be many free activities for the kids, live entertainment, food vendors and a great time throughout the gardens and surrounding venues.

We are hoping to have a donkey with Mary on it leading our float, with Joseph, Wise Men and shepherds. It would be quite nice to have a drummer boy too. If you have an appropriate costume for any of these characters please email me davidm@stmarysrotorua.school.nz
The rest of the children will be on the float which will be decorated as a stable. Children can come dressed as angels, shepherds and in any clothes that might resemble people in Jesus’ era...

Every year our school produces a school magazine filled with photos and memories from throughout the year. Please support our school by purchasing a yearbook for your family to keep as a memory of St Mary’s 2019. You can purchase yearbooks for $5 by ordering at the school office. The magazines will be available before the end of the school year on 20 December. All funds raised from magazine sales go towards supporting student learning here at St Mary’s.

Have a great week everyone.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

This Friday our school is hosting the DRS (Directors of Religious Studies) from around the Diocese. These workshops are always great for collaborative planning opportunities and implementing ways to network between our schools with the Religious Education Programme. A new RE Curriculum is in the process of being drafted. It looks very good and will incorporate years 1-13.

We pray for all the students who have just begun their Sacramental Programme. May this be the beginning of a life long journey in discovering who God is and developing their faith.

SPECIAL MENTION

Nate Rowe was lucky enough to be chosen as one of 10 7/8yr olds to ride at the KTM Junior Supercross race at the SX Open held at the Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland over the weekend. The event is designed to give future superstars of supercross the opportunity to immerse themselves in a large scale event, meet & greet champions in the sport and an opportunity to gain invaluable experience that they will never forget, it surely delivered that for Nate.
What an amazing memory to have, we are so excited to see where Nate goes in supercross.
