Newsletter No 27 4 September 2019

Kia Ora,

We are into September and it is Spring. It might not quite feel like that now but what a beautiful day we had on Sunday to welcome in Spring.

I hope all the dads had a happy Father’s Day on Sunday. Thanks to our PTA who sold presents for our children to give their fathers. I know it is a life-saver for mothers who don’t have to go out and buy expensive gifts.

Thanks for supporting Daffodil Day. Children came dressed in bright clothes and they enjoyed contributing to the coin trail.

This week is another busy week at school with a Cricket Awareness Programme for our Kahikatea and Totara teams, Rotomaths was held last night, ICAS Science Exam is scheduled for tomorrow and a group of schools, including ours, is using the pool for Aquabotics after-school tomorrow.

Friday we celebrate the Nativity of Mary with Mass and you are all invited to join us for this. We will especially be welcoming our new families at this Mass.

Maori Language week is next week, The chosen theme for 2019 is again 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’.

‘Kia Kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand English with its meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'. Our tamariki will be involved in different activities through the week.

There has been lots of news about measles in the media lately. We have looked at our Immunisation register, and if your child is not immunised according to our records, you will receive a letter via your child. Your child should have been vaccinated twice, after 15 months and 4 years. If your child didn’t receive the vaccination after 4 years then they will need a catch-up vaccination.

VACCINATIONS ARE FREE FROM YOUR GP. If you are not sure if your child is fully vaccinated you can contact your GP. Please ensure you read the letter and return the information we need to your child’s teacher.

For children aged 5 years or older, teenagers and adults aged under 50 years (i.e. born in 1969 or later) who do not have two documented doses of MMR vaccine, it is recommended to receive a catch-up MMR vaccination. When two catch-up doses of MMR vaccine are required, the second MMR vaccination can be given a minimum of 4 weeks after the first MMR dose.

And finally, we farewell Laura Mack, teacher in Room 14, who takes leave from the end of the week to have her baby. This is a very exciting time for Laura and her husband Josh. We wish them both all the best as they prepare for that very special time of parenthood.

Lorette Teidt, former Deputy Principal from St Michael’s, will be picking up the reins in Room 14 from Week 9. Lorette is a very experienced teacher and I am looking forward to her joining our team.

Have a good week

Kind regards,
David Macmillan, Principal.

Bula Everyone,

Last week our RE Leaders judged and awarded students in the RE ART competition. The variety and thought that went into the art exhibits was fantastic. Thanks to those who were able to find time to put something in. Next year we hope to do it again!

The Nativity of Mary Mass is this Friday. This is the birth of Mary-the Mother of Jesus. We celebrate this because Mary was who God chose to bear the Saviour of the world making Holiness visible to us.

Ariel Muchirahondo recently competed at the Bay of Plenty Short Course Swimming Championships. The Daily Post quoted the following "Ariel was at the peak of his powers in the 10-year-old boys' division, taking home 10 gold medals. They came in all four strokes as well as the 100m and 200m medley. His best performance came in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2m 28.90s, which was just outside the Bay of Plenty record". Amazing Ariel - well done!!
