Newsletter No 36, 21 November 2018

Kia ora,

Thank you to the parents of Year 2 students who came to the e-Learning Information Evening last week. There was an excellent turnout and the speakers were very informative. Thanks to our excellent student speakers and also to Anne, Bevan and our invited guest Rob Clarke. I think those of you who were present would agree that the meeting was helpful.

On Monday JPC had their workday and a team of students from JPC came to St Mary’s to paint a mural on Kakano’s container. I think it looks marvellous, so thank you to those students.

Yesterday our Athletic Team competed in the Inter-Schools’ Competition. All our athletes performed well. Placings appear in the sports section of the newsletter.

Thanks to Catherine Elmiger our Sports’ Coordinator who managed the team and Sara Field who helped with the High Jump competition and all the parents who helped get students to the right spot at the right time.

Each week we are getting a number of schools visiting St Mary’s to see different parts of the school in action. Many are wanting to see our new entrant/year 1 classes as most schools are focusing on ‘learning through play’. I am very proud of what are teachers are achieving in their classrooms.

Next Wednesday forty of our Kapa haka group are involved in the Kapa haka festival. They have been practising for a long time now under the tutorage of Kori Tini. I wish the group well and I hope they enjoy performing on stage next week.

Noah and the Ark is shaping up well and the children are practising hard. All children are learning songs and dances. Songs can be found on the R.E. Music site (available only to Y 3 - 6 who have access to this site via their chromebooks). We are encouraging children to be practising these songs at home. Every child will be involved in at least two performances and the main actors will be appearing in all four of the performances. I am really looking forward to the show. I’ll let you know when tickets go on sale.

In the newsletter you will see a notice advertising the sale of real christmas trees. For every tree sold, a donation will be made to St Mary’s. The scent of the pine is awesome, so I will be lining up for my tree.

Have a great week everyone.

Regards

David Macmillan, Principal.

To St Mary’s School Community,
For the last two years our wonderful school and church community have supported Angel Tree, which is a branch of the Prison Fellowship of New Zealand (PFNZ), a Christian charitable organisation that was founded in NZ over 40 years ago. For the last 18 years, PFNZ and Angel Tree have been making a difference at Christmas for children who have a parent/grandparent in prison. Last year nearly 4000 children benefitted nation wide and St Mary’s helped by supporting children in Rotorua.

This is how it works – Angel Tree buys presents for children on behalf of the parent/grandparent who is in prison. Gifts are $25.00 each and next week a Christmas tree will be in the school office foyer. On the tree will be Angel Tree tags that have a child’s name, age and a present suggestion from their caregivers. Please support Angel Tree by taking a tag and writing your name next to the child’s name on the list. The list will be next to the tree in the foyer. Please buy a present and bring it back to the school Christmas tree UNWRAPPED and with the tag attached by Monday 3rd of December. Donations of wrapping paper are also gratefully appreciated.

If you can’t get to the office to pick a tag, please text me and I will put one in a sealed envelope for your child to bring home. Rachel Schuster 0274461351.

Thank you for supporting Angel Tree and children in our Rotorua community.

From our Director of Religious Studies

Our school choir is busy preparing for our end of year Mass. They are also working on the Christmas carols which they would like to share at a school assembly in a few weeks.
It has been great to see class awards given to students for displaying our school values. These values are essential to being a successful learner and productive member of our wider society. It is important they are recognised in every student at our school at some point. What we show recognition for is what students will value in themselves and in others. It is not just the academic mileage children make but the holistic development of a child that teachers strive to nurture.

A massive thanks to Aaron Brown and Api Waititi and Dobby Dobson for building the NOAH ARK props for us! What a great effort-thank you.
