Newsletter No 33 4 November 2020

Dear Everyone,

We had our Athletics Sports on Monday. It was a perfect day, weather-wise. Thanks to Lorna Dobson, Leanne and the team of St Mary’s staff who helped to ensure the day ran smoothly. A big thank you to the number of parents and whanau who also helped out on the day. Our team of athletes will now be selected to compete in the interschool sports this month.

The Working bee was successful and we managed to get a lot done: 2 new picnic tables made, old picnic tables repaired, tiles replaced on garden seats, all the gardens tidied, roses sprayed, part of the school painted, fence around the turf repaired, black out curtains put up over hall windows, our wooden 3D Christmas Trees undercoated, fruit trees pruned and orchard area tidied up. Thanks to our caretaker Richard Malone for coordinating this day. Thanks to our awesome PTA who provided the morning tea and lunch. Thanks to the great support we got from parents, your help was very much appreciated. As you can see we achieved everything on our list.

Our EPro8 team won the region’s Grand Final last Friday. They were placed third in the semi finals a few weeks ago and now are the winners. Very exciting. Congratulations to Xavier Sarich-Dunn, Joseph Ronayne, Dominic Spanbroek and Aaron Pepper.

PTA has been very busy and their raffle was drawn at assembly on Friday. Congratulations to 1st prizewinner Kyree Catena, 2nd Jenny Uyoo, 3 Paul Martin. Thanks to our PTA for organising this and thanks to all those who sold tickets in the raffle.

Our PTA has a meeting tonight Wednesday 4 November at 7pm in the school staffroom. Anyone is welcome to attend this meeting.

Rehearsals for Peter Pan are going very well. The performance dates have been incorrect in the newsletter. The correct dates are Tuesday 8th December and Wednesday 9th December. All students are involved and it’s sure to be a great show with lots of enthusiastic children performing.

Friday 13th November is a Teacher Only Day. There will be no school on this day. If you need to enrol your child in the Glenholme After School Care, please contact Mary-Ann Roling on 021 215599. She will be running this at St Mary’s. Thank you for your support with this.

An internationally renowned, FREE, Parenting Program will be offered at St Mary’s in Terms 1 and 2 of 2021. It will be presented by Erna Cullen, from the Ministry of Education and Corbus Venter, an Educational Psychologist with a passion for helping young children.
It is a 14 week evidence based program that supports parents who have concerns about their child’s conduct. If you feel like you need some help or want to understand your children better, this is a course for you.
There will be an information afternoon/evening held on the 5th November in the school library at 2.30pm (hosted by the convenor, Erna Cullen), and again at 5.15pm (hosted by Brigitte Holmes), for those interested in learning more about the Incredible Years' Parent course. Feel free to come along to find out more and have a chat to the convenors of the course or to sign up.
If you would like to register your interest for this course earlier, please email or phone Brigitte Holmes, our Learning Support Coordinator. Mobile 0272121206

WELCOME TO NEW FAMILIES: This coming Friday at our afternoon assembly, we will be especially welcoming our new students and families to our school community. You are all very welcome to be part of this.

We would welcome any businesses or individuals who might be keen to sponsor our production as there are always costs involved in putting on a show this size. (Your business logo will be on the programme and digitally displayed at both performances).
If you are able to help us out please email Margo Mason with your details and logo.

Kia tau te rangimārie kia koutou – Peace be with you.

Our theme of Solidarity is integrated into our school production and is a focus in Religious Education through our Caritas study. Students are learning about some of the injustices in our world and some ways we can help with that. Pope John Paul was an advocate for solidarity. For him, Solidarity, had this clear advantage: that whereas ‘Class Struggle’ is a struggle against others, solidarity implies a struggle with others, with injustice (rather than other people) as the enemy. For Papa Wojtyla, it is collaboration which is the characteristic way of acting in a spirit of solidarity (John Paul II, Encyclical Letter For the Twentieth Anniversary Of Populorum Progression, Sollicitudo Rei Socialis).

“We are all one family in the world. Building a community that empowers everyone to attain their full potential through each of us respecting each other’s dignity, rights and responsibilities makes the world a better place to live”

Kia Kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui.

Director of Religious Education
