Newsletter No 31, 17 October 2018

Kia ora,

It was lovely to have everyone back for the start of term. The weather seemed to be kind, particularly during the first week of the holidays. Fingers crossed we might see the temperatures rising over the coming weeks.

Welcome to our new students and their families: Archie Frew, Carol Lim, Levi Gunn, Kennedy Grant, Mila Grant, Kaia Lee Warren, Abbey Shi, and Armaan Prasad. We hope your time with us is happy and that you enjoy all the opportunities for learning that you encounter during your years at St Mary’s.

Some great news! We are having a School Show this year. The show is a modern take on Noah and the Ark. Our years 5 and 6 students are auditioning this week for major parts, but all children in the school will be involved. Each class will be dancing and singing in different parts of the show. Very exciting!

During the following weekend, November 3rd, we are having a working bee at our school. We have a number of jobs on our list ranging from handy-man jobs, maintenance on the playgrounds, putting together an aviary, painting the boundary fence on Ranolf St, building a frame around the sandpit, painting the container, constructing a fence bordering the library grounds, painting Kakano’s playhouse, clearing the hall gutters (we have hired a scissor lift) and I am sure there will be plenty more jobs to do. Come along and meet other parents, enjoy a morning tea and a delicious lunch. Children are welcome also. For catering purposes please let the office know if you can assist, even if it is just for an hour or two.

I hope that our children were busy reading over the holiday break and have filled in their holiday reading logs. The weather over the holidays was ideal for reading. Logs need to be returned to school by next Wednesday so they can be included in the lucky draw. Lots of great prizes are up for grabs in the lucky draw.

The pool is in perfect condition for swimming. The water temperature is around 31 degrees, so it is warm. The pool is a great facility and we expect that children will have their swimming togs with them when their class is timetabled for swimming. Look at your child’s class blog to see if your child’s class is swimming for the week.

This month is the month of the Rosary. On Wednesdays we come together as a school for Rosary. Rosary is at 9.00am in the school hall if you would like to join us. Children from the Kahikatea Team will lead us this week.

We would like all our school families to consider having their child make their First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Reconciliation. This is a notice from our parish.

At St Mary’s Catholic Church 7.00 pm, Thursday 18th or Thursday 25th October.

There will be a briefing on the Sacramental Programme, dates will be given and fees of $20.00 are required to be paid.

For children who were not baptised in Rotorua, please bring a baptismal certificate.

The children are required to be 8 years old by the 1st November 2018.

Children who are not baptised or who are baptised in another Christian faith and would like to become Catholic are required to book an appointment with Fr Eamon through the Parish office to discuss options.

Thank you all for sending your children in summer uniform this week. If you need more uniform you can purchase it from our shop or through our school website. You can order and pay online and pick up your order from the school office.

A Monica Moore Production.
Yes it’s that time again! Every two years we hold a school production and this year all students will be involved. We need adult helpers to make this a school success.

Can you help?
We need some dedicated teams to help with some prop construction and some costumes.
If you are able to help us out-please email me and let me know what you are keen to assist with.
Teacher in charge of the Arts -St Mary’s School.

Sponsorship: We would also welcome any businesses or individuals that are keen to sponsor our production. As there are always costs involved in putting on a show this size. Your business logo will be on the programme and digitally displayed in all 4 show performances.
If you are able to help us out with sponsorship please email Margo Mason our awesome admin wonder woman, with your details and business logo.

Thanking you.

From our Director of Religious Studies

This term is a busy one in terms of our Liturgical calendar events.

We have our All Souls/All Saints Day Liturgy in week 3.

In week 4 we have our annual Grandparents/Friend Day celebrations. Morning school Mass will be followed by a concert put on by various culture and art groups in our school. Mark this on your calendars and start letting family know now!

Classes will also be looking at our school values this term-particularly Joy and Creativity. Classes will be focussing on the Jesus strand this term. This will lead us into Advent study.

The Sacramental programme will commence this term. Those students who are baptised and 8 years or older are able to begin their next steps of their Catholic journey. Please contact Andrea at the Church office for more information. Note this programme is run through the Church not the school, and inquires need to be made through the Church office.
