Newsletter No 30, 26 September 2018

Kia ora,

The curtain comes down on another term. It has been a very busy term and I would like to thank you all for your on-going support. I hope you get to spend time with your children over the holidays. The fourth term will fly by very quickly and Christmas will be here before we know it.

A large contingent of our students competed in the MIG’s competition on Friday. Thanks to Shanelle, Kelley and Marie Hughes who have been preparing the children over many weeks. We are very lucky to have a Gym club running in our school at lunchtimes.

We had Principal’s Morning Tea today. I was very pleased to be able to host around forty of our children to morning tea in the staffroom. Each child received a special letter congratulating them and outlining why they received the letter. Congratulations children.

Tomorrow, for the first time, three schools from our Community of Learning are playing each other in Football, Netball and Basketball. The schools involved in the exchange are St Mary’s Tauranga, St Thomas More Mt Maunganui and St Mary's Rotorua. Fingers crossed the weather will be fine.

Tomorrow night we have the PTA Disco. It would be great if as many children as possible can come and enjoy this social occasion. The disco runs from 5.30pm until 7.00pm. The entry is $2 and there’s lots of food on sale.

And Friday we have a mufti day supporting Loud Shirt Day. Children can wear a loud shirt over their uniform for a gold coin donation.

The Senior Playground is closed until Friday. The surface is being replaced. The cost is $30,000 and the proceeds from this year’s Gala Day has paid for this. Thanks to our awesome PTA.

While we are talking about the Sacraments, we encourage all of our students at St Mary’s to continue their Catholic faith journey and to consider being involved in the Sacramental programmes, focusing on Reconciliation, Communion and Confirmation. There are information evenings coming up for you to find out more about the Programme. These are on the 18th or 25th October at 7pm at St Mary’s Catholic Church. school.

Lots of parents have been in to sort out summer uniforms. Students are to start Term 4 in full summer uniform. Our Uniform Shop is open Mondays (8.30-9.00am), Wednesdays (2.30-3.00pm) & Fridays (8.30-9.00am) during term time. The girls’ summer dresses are currently only available from our school uniform shop. Please don’t forget children need to wear the school sun hats in term 4.

We also sell school uniform via our school website. You can order and pay online and pick up your uniform from the school reception after you have been notified by email that the uniform is ready to pick up. Hopefully this will be easier for those parents who find it difficult to get to our uniform shop.

The Holiday Reading Programme will be distributed today. Please encourage your child to read over the holidays. To be in the draw we need your reading log back by Monday 22 October. Lots of awesome prizes to be won.

We intend to have a working bee on the third Saturday after the holidays: November 3rd. There are a number of jobs that need to be done. If you are willing to manage a particular project, can you please let me or Michelle Strathern know. The projects include; painting, building sandpit surround, playground maintenance, concreting, cleaning gutters, putting together an aviary, tree maintenance, laying cobblestone path, stripping paint off aluminium doors. This list is getting longer. I was amazed at the support we received for last year’s working bee, so I would really appreciate your support with this one too please. Children are welcome and we will have a BBQ lunch.
Have a great holiday .....

David Macmillan, Principal.

From our Director of Religious Studies

Hello Everyone,
As the term comes to an end, classes will be reflecting on the learning strands this term. A pivotal part of reflection and or assessment in RE will be for our students to consider what impact their decisions have and to think about how they contribute in our Catholic faith. Next term we look forward to our annual Grandparents' Day celebrations and Mass. Our 2018 children’s choir will be singing at this Mass and also performing in the school concert afterwards. This will be in week 4 and is always a memorable occasion. So give your extended family members plenty of notice!
Have a safe and restful break with your tamariki.
2018 marks the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand. On 19 September 1893 the Electoral Act 1893 was passed, giving all women in New Zealand the right to vote. A little country like New Zealand-Aotearoa has a history of making change for the better. We must be mindful of those who have carved the way before us in so many ways and look toward the next generation in breaking new ground in areas of need in society.

Fantastic effort team and to all our other St Mary's players.
