Kia ora, It was lovely to have everyone back for the start of term. The weather was typically spring weather with some chilly wet days but fine enough for children to get outdoors and also start their swimming programme in our school pool. Fingers crossed we will see the temperatures rising over the coming weeks. Welcome to our new students and their families. We hope your time with us is happy and that you enjoy all the opportunities for learning that you encounter during your years at St Mary’s. Our roll is very full at the moment so if you have pre-schoolers that you intend to enrol at St Mary’s for next year, please pick up an enrolment form from the office. Spaces are limited. Practices have started for our production ‘Peter Pan’ and I must say how impressed I am with the talent in our school. We are so lucky to also have talented teachers and parents who are helping with this production. Students auditioned last term for major parts, but all children in the school will be involved. Each class will be dancing and singing in different parts of the show. Very exciting! We intend to have a working bee on the third Saturday after the holidays, November 2nd. There are a number of jobs that need to be done. If you are willing to help, can you please let the office know. The projects include painting, cleaning gutters, stripping paint off aluminium doors, gardening and a general tidy up. I’ve been amazed at the support we receive for our working bees and I would really appreciate your support with this one too please. Come along and meet other parents, enjoy a morning tea and a delicious lunch. Children are welcome also. For catering purposes please let the office know if you can assist, even if it is just for an hour or two. I hope that our children were busy reading over the holiday break and have filled in their holiday reading logs. The weather over the holidays was ideal for reading. Logs need to be returned to school by tomorrow so they can be included in the lucky draw. Lots of great prizes are up for grabs in the lucky draw. The pool is open and in perfect condition for swimming. The water temperature is around 32 degrees, so it is warm. The pool is a great facility and we expect that children will have their swimming togs with them when their class is timetabled for swimming. Look at your child’s class educa post to see if your child’s class is swimming for the week. Please note that we have a Teacher Only Day on Friday November 13th. There will be no school for children on this day. We are also finishing a day earlier at the end of the year, so the last day is now Wednesday December 16th. This month is the month of the Rosary. On Thursdays we come together as a school for Rosary. Rosary is at 8.45am in the school hall if you would like to join us. Children from the Totara Team will lead us this week.. Thank you all for sending your children in summer uniform this week. If you need more uniform you can purchase it from our shop or through our school website. You can order and pay online and pick up your order from the school office. Children must wear a blue school sunhat at school. This is compulsory, so for those children who do not wear a school sunhat they will need to sit in the shade by their classroom. Summer Sport has started this week. Our school is praying the rosary each Thursday in October. The word rosary comes from Latin and means a garland of roses, the rose being one of the flowers used to symbolize the Virgin Mary. If you were to ask what object is most emblematic of Catholics, people would probably say, “The rosary, of course.” This Thursday senior school will lead the Joyful mysteries. It is the meditation on the mysteries that gives the rosary its staying power.
The Joyful Mysteries are these: the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38), the Visitation (Luke 1:40-56), the Nativity (Luke 2:6-20), the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:21-39), and the Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41-51).
