Newsletter No 26, 29 August 2018

Kia Ora,

Our PTA held their AGM last Wednesday. Thanks to those who were able to attend. Our Chair is Renee Cleaver, Secretary Juanita Conder, Treasurer Olivia Dunlop, Hospitality Rachel Schuster. A couple of stalwarts have retired: Shanelle McCashin and Michelle Strathern. Thank you for your tireless work over the years. You have been fabulous.

The PTA has fundraised for the last few years for our Modern Learning Environment: decks and canopies between Rooms 15 and 16 and behind Rooms 11 and 13, sound system, sandpit, cobbled area and fencing around Kakano classrooms. The fence is to be built in a couple of weeks. The last gala day’s fundraising was for a new surface under the senior playground and that is to be completed over the holidays. The cost of that project is approximately $30,000. Thanks PTA and thank you parents for your support with the fundraising,

Congratulations to our Golfing star Jayden Elmiger who shot a Hole in one at the Rotorua Golf Course on the 8th Tee. What an achievement. Well done Jayden.

Next Friday we are celebrating Nativity of Mary Mass at 9.00am. We really enjoy having you join us for school Masses. If you have some time we would love to see you. We are also welcoming our new families after Mass.

It is probably a good time to think about organising your child’s summer uniform. Students are to start Term 4 in full summer uniform. Our Uniform Shop is open Mondays (8.30-9.00am), Wednesdays (2.30-3.00pm) and Fridays (8.30-9.00am) during term time. The Warehouse stocks some of our uniform. The girls’ summer dresses are only available from our school uniform shop.

Summer uniform is:
Boys - Grey drill shorts and a royal blue short sleeved polo shirt.
Girls - Blue check dress.
All students need a royal blue sunhat.
Feilding red woollen school jersey.
Black sandals for footwear (no socks to be worn with sandals).

Generally our children wear our uniform well. However I am noticing some of our children are wearing non-uniform shoes. Shoes should be black and leather. If your child is not wearing the correct shoes could you please attend to this.

You can also purchase school uniform via our school website. You can order and pay online and pick up your uniform from the school reception after you have been notified by email that the uniform is ready to pick up. Hopefully it will be easier for those parents who find it difficult to get to our uniform shop.

St Mary’s School is taking part in the Colgate Community Garden Challenge. This means as a school we need to start collecting oral waste products. There will be a box outside Room 6 where used products can be placed. We can win a total of $4000 for our school grounds and gardens. Let’s start recycling and collecting for our School!

Wishing all Fathers, Grandfathers and Poppas an awesome day on Sunday!

David Macmillan, Principal.

Father's Day gifts
The PTA are selling Father’s day gifts at lunchtime over the next three days. The gifts cost $3.00 and children will have an array of gifts to choose from. I hope all the Fathers, Grandfathers and Poppas have an awesome day on Sunday.

This survey is completely anonymous. No names are recorded and no one will know your answers.

From Our Director of Religious Studies:

Tēnā koutou everyone,
Our Nativity of Mary Mass is coming up in week 7(7th September).
We know that everyone has a birthday. Like all parents, Mary’s parents Joachim and Ann—probably took one look at their newborn daughter and knew that she was special. Joachim and Ann loved God very much, and they were filled with gratitude to God for the gift of a child. They raised Mary as a child of God, teaching her to love and serve God. When the angel Gabriel told Mary that she had been chosen to be the Mother of Jesus, she already had great faith in God. Her strong faith and trust allowed her to say yes to God’s plan for her. We cannot be certain what the future holds for any newborn infant, but we do know that the life of each person has meaning and purpose. READ MORE HERE:

Our school choir is looking for more members. If your child loves to sing and is year 3-6 please encourage them to pop along and see if it is something they would like to do!

Social Justice Week 2018 runs from September 9-15 and will focus on disability and inclusion. The title of the resources is Enabling Communities: Everyone has a part to play. The Caritas social justice in schools promotes awareness and increases understanding of social justice issues through the lens of Catholic social teaching.
