Newsletter No 19 1 July 2020

Dear Parents/Whanau

On Friday, the curtain comes down on an interesting term. Having to deal with all things relating to Covid has been exhausting and our staff haven’t really had a rest since the Christmas break. The online learning, although done at home, was very intense. I would like to thank our staff for their hard work over the last 5 months and I would also like to acknowledge you all for supporting our teachers and your children’s learning over this period. So to everyone: our hardworking and dedicated teachers, support staff, management team, parents and caregivers, BOT, PTA, sports coaches, I thank you for your role in making our school a great place for children to learn. I would like to also acknowledge the great students we are very fortunate to work with at St Mary’s.

It is hard to believe that we are halfway through our school year and when we return from the Winter Holidays we will have passed the halfway mark in the Winter Season. Roll on the Spring months.

Tomorrow I am hosting a group of students to a Principal’s morning Tea. Children will get a special letter from me explaining why they were invited to morning tea.

Thursday night the PTA is hosting a disco which is going to be held from 5.30pm - 7.00pm. There is no door charge and there will be lots of refreshments children can purchase on the night. Please be prompt in picking your children up at 7.00pm.

School photos were taken today. Thank you for making sure that your child came in the correct school uniform.

On Friday we have mufti day. Makenna, a student, won 'Principal for the Day' at this year’s Gala Day. As part of her job Makenna is able to make one rule for the day. Here is her letter with details of her rule. There is no charge for the Mufti Day. I am looking forward to putting my feet up on Friday.

MUFTI DAY: Date: Friday 3rd of July

Dear Parents and Children at St. Mary’s,

On Friday we are going to call it Wild Animal Day. We want children to come to school as wild animals like big cats, big dogs, zebras, tigers etc. There will be a winner, best dressed animal chosen and announced at Friday’s Assembly. If children choose not to come as an animal that is their choice. They can be something else if they want. We will also be coming to every class and taking photos to put on the school blog. At the end of the day every teacher will choose a kid that has been good for the day and they will get a treat - so remember to be good every day, particularly on Friday.

Miss Makenna Hall Principal For the Day
Miss Melody Lette-Grindley Principal for the Day P.A.

The holiday reading programme is on again these holidays. The reading logs will be sent home tomorrow. There are many great prizes this time. Children can start entering their books as soon as they get their logs and the draw will take place in the first week of Term 3, Friday 24th July. PLEASE, please keep your children reading over the holidays. If you are short of books at home, you could take your child to the town library. If you read to your child, enter that on your child’s log too.

At the beginning of next term children’s reports will be sent home and we are planning on having 3-way conferences on July 28 and 29. Information about these will be provided at the start of Term 3.

Wishing everyone a happy, safe, restful and enjoyable winter holiday break. School will close for our learners on Friday, 3rd July, at 3pm. Term 3 commences on Monday 20 July.

See you next term!

Enjoy your week.
Kind regards, David Macmillan.

We had a great response to our RE Art competition. Some of the entries are now on display in our school library.
I was very impressed with the range of art mediums used and the creativity of the entries.
