Newsletter No 15 28 May 2019

Kia Ora,

This week we heard the sad news that Father Timmerman has passed away. This is what the Daily Post said, “ Long-serving Rotorua priest Father Timmerman has died, aged 100. A wonderful and generous person is how many are remembering long-standing Rotorua priest Father (Tim) Anton Timmerman. He died at the weekend at the age of 100 in Auckland. Father Timmerman, who retired in 2008 after celebrating 65 years of priesthood, served in Rotorua for about 60 years. Originally from the Netherlands, Father Timmerman studied to be a priest in the Netherlands, graduating in 1945, before coming to New Zealand in 1949. REST IN PEACE FATHER TIMMERMAN.

Children’s Day of Prayer Liturgy went very well. Children arrived in their National Costume and we were all greeted at the beginning of the Liturgy in many languages. Thank you to those parents who joined us and also to the parents who dressed their children in their national costume. It was great to see so many of our children dress up for the occasion. Thank you to our DRS Bernie Hall for organising this liturgy.

We were lucky with the weather for our cross country. It is always great to see so many of you there supporting your children. Thanks for the huge number of parents who helped with marshalling during the races and also to the many parents who helped with the transporting of students. Thanks also to our teacher in charge of PE and Health, Lorna Dobson and our Sports’ Coordinator Catherine Elmiger for organising this successful event.

Congratulations to Shanelle McCashin on her appointment as our new school receptionist. Shanelle has been in an acting role since Maggie Dalton resigned. On that note, please keep Maggie in your prayers as she continues her health treatment.

Thank you to those who participated in the Safe Ways to School Survey. It has now closed so the classes who had 50% or higher participation will receive their pizzas in the next week or two. The classes who gained over 50% participation are Rooms 1, 4, 6 and 11.

Primary and Secondary Schools have voted to strike on Wednesday 29th May (tomorrow). The school will not be open for instruction on this day. We also indicated at the beginning of the year that we will be joining other primary schools in our Community of Learning (COL) for a Teacher Only Day on Friday 31st May. There will be no school on this day either. Sorry for the inconvenience that this may cause. If you need child care on these days you can contact Mary-Anne Roling on 347 0709 or 0211 215599

The week commencing 10 June - JPC staff are here to conduct interviews with our Year 6 students. If you have a student in Year 6 please ring our school office to make an appointment. FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Talofa Everyone,

We continue to pray for those undertaking the Sacramental programme, and hope they are enjoying their faith journey. Our Ascension Liturgy is on Thursday at 10:00am in our school hall. Thanks to all those students who were able to dress in national costume last week. They looked wonderful, and it was a good reminder of our cultural diversity here at St Mary’s. Classes are still learning about the Sacraments and here at St Mary’s RE is often also integrated alongside other subjects.

The teachers at St Mary’s do a fantastic job at ensuring your child learns holistically about the Catholic faith. Alongside the knowledge being taught in RE, there is also a strong emphasis on how that may look, sound and feel like, in everyday situations.
