Newsletter No 14 22 May 2019

Kia Ora,

We had our last BOT meeting for this current Board on Monday night. Paul Andrews and Jean-Paul Gaston are not standing again, and Catriona Gordon, our BOT chair is staying on as a seconded member until the end of the year so I will farewell her then. I would like to thank both JP and Paul for their six years of service. They have been valuable members of our board and I have appreciated the support they have given to the school and myself as principal. JP has been chairman of the board for a year, and was vice chairman for the other years, he has also looked after the BOT finance portfolio. Paul has chaired the property committee and has overseen a number of building projects and spearheaded working bees at the school whilst being on the board. They have been champions for our school and along with their wives, Lizzy Gaston and Jan Andrews, have given a huge amount of time to our school. Thank you! Susan Nelson, our staff rep, is also not seeking re-election and I would also like to thank her for the work she has done on the board.

The Board elections take place in June and nominations for positions close this coming Friday. Being a School Trustee is an important role and we seek a range of skills and experiences within applicants for this role which will suit those who believe in making a positive difference to our children’s learning.

Neil MacKay, a speaker with an international reputation and at the cutting edge of research on Dyslexia, will be speaking at JPC in the Edmund Rice Centre on Monday 27th at 6.00 to 8.00pm. All are welcome.

Thank you to those parents who participated in the Safe Ways to School survey. The information is going to help the Rotorua Lakes District Council come up with some solutions that might make our cycleways safer. 45% of our parents participated in the survey. Rooms 4, 6 and 11 have earnt themselves a pizza.

The OPEN NIGHT AT JPC is on THURSDAY 23rd MAY (tomorrow evening)commencing with tours of the campus between 4.30 and 5.30pm, followed by the 2020 enrolment information presentation in the Edmund Rice Centre. Please put this date in your diary if you or someone you know is considering enrolling a child at JPC next year.

An advance warning. Primary and Secondary Schools have voted to strike on Wednesday 29th May. The school will not be open for instruction on this day. We also indicated at the beginning of the year that we will be joining other primary schools in our Community of Learning (COL) for a Teacher Only Day on Friday 31st May. There will be no school on this day either. Sorry for the inconvenience that this may cause. Monday 3rd June is Queen’s Birthday and because that is a public holiday, there will be no school.

Our cross country is scheduled for the Redwoods on Monday May 27th at 1.00pm. This event is for children in the Kahikatea (Yr 3 & 4) and Totara teams (Yr 5 & 6). We will be needing some assistance running this event, so if you can help with marshalling please drop an email to Lorna Dobson (Room 6) lornad@stmarysrotorua.school.nz

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Namaste!
This Thursday (tomorrow) 23rd is Children's World Day of Prayer - At 10:00am in the church. This Liturgy is for celebrating all children all over the world and praying for those children in countries who are most at risk. Risk from war, violence, poverty and starvation, those who receive no education, victims of child trafficking, and those orphaned.
To help represent we stand as one for all children around the world who are at risk in any way. Students are invited to come to school in their national dress, national colours or national costume of their country of origin or heritage. Students may get dressed into school uniform afterwards if they wish, or wear their costume for the day.

Classes continue to enjoy Seminarian Issac’s visiting our students and school. Issac has been at some of our Liturgies as well. It is great to have him celebrate and be part of our school community.
