Newsletter No 13 15 May 2019

Kia Ora,

The Scholastic Enchanted Forest Book Fair in our school library finished on Monday.Thank you to all those who visited the library during this time. The Family Day was a huge success with people enjoying the deliciously enchanted, forest themed cakes and snacks. Because of your fantastic support we will be able to get $1,000 worth of free books from Scholastic. Thanks to our librarian Kay Hall for organising this successful event and to our 'baker supreme', Viv Radley.

Tomorrow is Support Staff Day. It is our chance to reflect on how much our support staff do and to thank them for the awesome work they do in our school. A big THANK YOU to them for being such important members of our school staff.

This week our Years 3 to 6 children had their Goal Setting Conferences. Thank you for your support with this. I think you will agree that this meeting is very worthwhile.

All our sports teams, by this weekend, would have played their first game. I was able to get around a few games in the weekend and I was very pleased to see that students were in correct sports uniform. I really encourage coaches and parents to promote positive sporting behaviour with all of our children, even when they are up against opposition teams who might not display positive behaviour. Generally our children are very good, but we have had issues with opposition teams.

Our Safe Ways to School Survey is now live. A pizza lunch for those classes who gain 70%.

‘IS YOUR CHILD’S ROUTE TO SCHOOL SAFE?.’

The Safe Ways to School Survey is now open. Our school has been selected to participate in the Ways to School survey. The survey is designed to help us understand preferred routes, barriers and safety issues that parents have getting kids walking and cycling safely to and from our school, and opportunities for improvement. The survey uses a fun interactive map, so you can see where you live and drop pins on area you’d like to comment on or improve. We suggest doing this with your children so that you can discuss safety hazards with them and record any suggestions that they may have too. Every class that reaches a 70% response rate of completed surveys will win a pizza lunch shout! Click on this link to complete the survey.

The OPEN NIGHT AT JPC is on THURSDAY 23rd MAY commencing with tours of the campus between 4.30 and 5.30pm, followed by the 2020 enrolment information presentation in the Edmund Rice Centre. Please put this date in your diary if you or someone you know is considering enrolling a child at JPC next year.

Our cross country is scheduled for the Redwoods on May 27th at 1.00pm. This event is for children in the Kahikatea (Yr 3 & 4) and Totara teams (Yr 5 & 6). We will be needing some assistance running this event, so if you can help with marshalling please drop an email to Lorna Dobson (Room 6) lornad@stmarysrotorua.school.nz.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES PARENT TRIENNIAL ELECTIONS 2019 are to be held in June. We have called for nominations for vacancies on the Board of Trustees for parent representatives. Being a School Trustee is an important role and we seek a range of skills and experiences within applicants for this role which will suit those who believe in making a positive difference to our children’s learning. All those eligible to vote will have received envelopes by post this week. If yours is not to hand please contact the office, or if you have a new address please advise the office.

School App for your phone
If you don't have the School App on your phone we would highly recommend you get this for your phone. It is free from the Google Play or Apple App store.

The phone app is used for notifications eg sports updates/cancellations and important reminders. It can also be used for accessing the School Calendar and school contact details, to purchase school uniform or to notify us of an absence. If we need to contact all parts in a hurry, the app is a very useful tool for us to use BUT you need to have it set up to receive notifications. Please read the following if you need instructions on how to set up for notifications.

Please check your School Phone App is up to date
If you have not updated the school app on your phone since the end of Term 1, could you please do an update. Probably a good time to also check the app settings for which notifications you wish to receive.

Students are invited to come to school in their national dress or national costume of their country of origin or heritage. This is to help represent that we stand as one for all children around the world who are at risk in any way.
