Newsletter No 11, 2 May 2018.

Kia Ora,

I hope children were able to get outside and enjoy their time on holiday. I hope that children were also able to get plenty of reading done during the holidays and have entered their stories onto their holiday reading logs. Children are to bring their reading logs back to school by next Thursday (May 10) to go in the lucky draw for a prize. The draw will take place on Friday 11th May.

During the holidays, Mike Jones, a Bishop’s Rep on our BOT and father of Whaea Eliana, was ordained as a Deacon in the church. It was a lovely Mass celebrated by Bishop Steve and a number of priests from the diocese. Congratulations Mike and we look forward to you working with staff and students.

We were well represented at the ANZAC parade and Civic Ceremony on ANZAC day. Thanks to the parents who also joined us for the event. Three of our students laid a wreath on our behalf at the ceremony.

This week we farewell Whaea Eliana Maxwell. Eliana has been teaching at the school at different levels over the years. She is a hardworking and gifted teacher with a big heart and she will be sorely missed. Eliana’s husband Clint, and children Shekinah and Noah are also often at school over the weekends helping Eliana. The Maxwell whanau is very excited about having a new member of the family joining them. Thank you Eliana for being an excellent teacher and I wish you all the best. We ask God’s blessings on you, your family and your baby.

With Eliana’s departure we welcome Nicole Hunter (nee Lovegrove) to our staff. Nicole will be taking over Eliana’s Room 12 class. Nicole was a student here at St Mary’s and a former student of JPC. So I guess it is a coming home for Nicole. Nicole has been teaching at Whakarongo School in Palmerston North over the last couple of years. Nicole is working with Eliana in Room 12 this week. I know you will all make her feel very welcome. If you have a child in Room 12, perhaps you could pop in and introduce yourself to Nicole.

This Friday we have over 200 students participating in the Mini Marathon. I hope our children enjoy running in this event. Thanks to the parents who will be down at the Events Centre supporting the children. Good luck to all those parents who are participating in the Rotorua Marathon this weekend.

Next week our Year 3 to 6 children have their Student Led Conferences. The conferences are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday (9 / 10 May). Please see booking link later in newsletter.

A big THANK YOU to Hielke Oppers from HARCOURTS who set up an Easter Activity book and colouring competition. Some of our clever artists entered the Harcourts colouring competition and Aanya from Room 5 won the competition. As a result of the win Room 5 are going ice skating!!!!! Lucky things.

Friday, 25th May we have our Pentecost Mass. Mass is at St Mary’s Church at 9.00am. We would like your support for this Mass please.

On the same Friday (25th May) is our School Cross Country at the Redwoods. It is only for our Year 3 to 6 students. The event will start at 1.00pm. More details will be sent home shortly.

Our buildings are almost finished and our plans have changed as to which classes will be relocating.
Following consultation with our Kakano and Kahikatea team, it has been decided that the new Innovative Learning Environment will be used by our New Entrants and Year 1 classes.
The building layout aligns with early childhood centres, so our new entrants will be familiar with this kind of space, making the transition easier for our new children.
The break out spaces in the Innovative Learning Environment align well with the play-based philosophy that our Junior team are following.
The Junior team will be physically closer to the year 2 classes, so they can share some of the breakout rooms and also have a transition programme in the fourth term for our Year 1 children moving to Year 2 in the following year.
The Year 3 & 4 teachers are happy to be in the Room 14 to 17 area. This space is also being modified with decks being built behind Rooms 16 and 17, deck extended outside Room 15 and each of the decks are to be covered. The outside spaces will be great learning spaces.

Have a great week everyone.
David Macmillan, Principal.

Hello everyone,

It is wonderful to see all our students back from the term break safe and well. This term we focus on Prayer and move into the Sacrament strand. We will also be looking at what Pentecost is. Our Pentecost Mass will be Friday the 25th of May, and it would be nice to see some families from our school attend. Winter sports begin and this is always a good opportunity for teams and players to demonstrate our St Mary’s school values, both on and off the playing fields/courts. Over the years I have noticed how well our students in a variety of sports codes do endorse school values. Students discover that even when other teams may not display good values, that is one of our points of difference.
We send our prayers out to Susan Townes, a former long serving teacher of St Mary’s who is presently undergoing treatment for a serious health issue.

Winter Sports

Winter Sports notices have closed now. Most teams are full, but I have a few openings. If you would like to complete a form I can waitlist your child and if we have enough to create another team then I will make a team up.

  1. The notice and registrations are available to see on the school website so if you did not receive your copy you can view it online. Click here to view

If your child is playing Hockey, please ensure that they have Shin Pads and St Mary sports sock to hold shin pads in place. Also a hockey stick (belly high) and a mouthguard. Uniform shirts will be handed out in the beginning of Term 2. They will wear a Hockey Shirt that I will supply from the office and their PE maroon Shorts.

Miniball Tops are the same as our Touch tops, so if your child played touch last term, hold on to your singlet. If not please return ASAP so our miniball kids have shirts to play in.
