Newsletter No 07, 21 March 2018.

Kia Ora,

Apologies that last week's newsletter wasn't sent out until Thursday. We had some technical issues that required outside support, hence the delay.

This week we have a Stations of the Cross Liturgy at 9.30 on Thursday morning and the St Joseph's Mass on Friday at 9am. We would like to invite parents and friends of the school to join us at either, or both, of these special events being held at St Mary's Church.

We wish to remind parents that along with other schools, St Mary's is closed on Good Friday (30 March), Easter Monday (2 April) and Easter Tuesday (3 April). Term 1 ends on Friday 13 April and Term 2 starts on Monday 30 April.

It's been a busy week at school. Today our Year 1-4 students attended an amazing show presented by two UK television presenters from the British Children's television show 'The Rhyme Rocket'. The comedy show focused on rhyme and poetry. The performance at school was pitched at a slightly higher level than the British TV shows - but for those who would like to see a little more at home here is a link to some of their TV show episodes.

Next week our Year 5 and 6 students are off on their Camp to Auckland. We hope the great weather we are having at the moment continues for them. We really appreciate how lucky we are at St Mary's to have so many parents keen to support us by assisting at camp. Thanks too, to our Year 5 and 6 teachers and support staff for all the extra work they do to provide this opportunity for our students. We wish all those attending camp a great time, a good night's sleep each night and a very enjoyable experience.

Congratulations to Jayden Elmiger on his recent success winning the Rotorua Men's Junior Stroke Play golf tournament last weekend. As the article in the Herald said,

"What makes the achievement remarkable is that players are put in the junior division based on handicap, not age. The St Mary's Catholic School student was playing against grown men, many with decades of golfing experience. The tournament comprised four rounds of golf, played over four weekends. Jayden scored 92, 92 and 100 to hold a two-shot lead going into the final round. The pressure to hold on to the lead would see many crumble, but the 10-year-old thrived under the pressure and scored 90 to claim victory."

Well done Jayden. We are particularly pleased to note your persistence and ability to stay focused when you were under so much pressure in the last holes of your final round.

Have a great week.

Anne Cato, Assistant Principal.

Mālō e lelei,
On Thursday we hold our Stations of the Cross Liturgy in the Church at 9:30am. The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. The stations are commonly used as a mini pilgrimage as the individual moves from station to station. At each station, the individual recalls and meditates on a specific event from Christ's last day. Specific prayers are recited, then the individual moves to the next station until all 14 are complete.
On Friday we celebrate St Joseph’s Day. St Joseph was the caregiver and foster dad to Jesus. Our school is a Josephite school and so this is an important day for us. We also recognise Sister Carina and the Josephite order and all they do and the real presence of this in our school.
