Newsletter No 06 13 March 2019

Kia Ora,

Another AWESOME Gala Day. Thank you, thank you all for your fantastic support. We got a great crowd, the weather was kind and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves at this great St Mary’s community event. Thanks to the many people and businesses who donated goods and services. We had lots of people volunteer many hours of work; it was truly a team effort. It was also fantastic to see so many JPC students helping out at the Gala.

The success of the Gala Day was due in large part to our hardworking PTA Gala team. Renee Cleaver, and Lizzy Gaston and their team - Rebecca Hesom, Heidi Symon, Kelley Kemp, Lynda Fox, Juanita Conder, Kate Keaney, Giovana Fredricksen, Logan Moka, Rachel Schuster, Monique Sholte, and Lorraine Thomson who have worked tirelessly co-ordinating our big day. A huge thank you to them all. I am amazed that we had a number of parents who no longer have children at our school take leave from their jobs to help with the Gala. You are amazing, Thank you. We took in approximately $27,900 on the night and with expenses taken out we should make a handsome profit of well over $20,000. Check out the many photos on our Facebook page. I will put some more up this weekend.

Many thanks to Neil Jessen (grandad of Samara in Room 7) who kindly made a new bike stand for the school - the area behind the caretaker's shed is much tidier and safer now.

Our Totara Team students are on camp this week and next. Each class is spending a night at Kearoa Marae at Horohoro. The classes who have been out so far have had an awesome time. Thanks to all the parents who have helped us or who are going to be helping with camp. Many have taken time off work to help. Please keep in your prayers the children who are still to go on camp that they have a safe camp and the weather is fine.

You may have heard that Maggie Dalton who is our school receptionist is unwell. Please keep her in your prayers.

Kind regards,
David Macmillan, Principal.

Showquest

ShowQuest Update

Unfortunately due to a lack of interest from Rotorua schools, Showquest Rotorua will not be going ahead. However, we have a plan B! We have been invited to perform at the Tauranga Showquest at the end of June. We are currently working to see if we can make this happen.

Also due to this and senior camps over the next two weeks, we are going to defer practice times until we confirm if we are able to participate. Thank you for your support and we will keep you posted.

So no practice for next week. We will let you know if/when practice resumes.

Thanks for your understanding.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES

During Lent, classes will be looking at the Caritas organisation and all they do to help those in need. Please support the Caritas appeal by donating change to your classroom Caritas money box.
Lent in schools:

singing.JPG

The theme for Lent 2019 is inspired by a quote from Pope Francis: 'Living our lives with love.'

We are called to live our lives with genuine love - for others and for God. This year students will focus on South Sudan. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is partnering with Caritas South Sudan and other Caritas agencies to provide emergency supplies to those affected by the famine and conflict in South Sudan where millions of people face severe hunger. The extreme food shortage has been caused by civil unrest and drought.

Quick Facts: Two-thirds of the population are under the age of 30, Only 27% of the population older than 15 years of age is literate, The literacy rate for males is 40% compared to 16% for females, The infant mortality rate is 105 (per 1,000 live births), Maternal mortality rate is 2,054 (per 100,000 live births), Only 17% of children are fully immunized, 55% of the population has access to improved sources of drinking water, Around 38% of the population walk for more than 30 minutes one way to collect drinking water, 80% of South Sudanese do not have access to any toilet facility.
