Newsletter No 02 19 February 2020

Hello Everyone,

What a great response we had today to the SportBOP Bike to Work Day. You can see by the photos on our facebook page the number of children and parents involved in this event. Thank you to the staff and parents who rode with our children from Sophia St and the parents who were on street crossings to marshall the riders across the many roads between Sophia St and school.

This Friday is our Opening School Mass at St Mary's Church at 9.00am. Mass is a great way to start our year of learning, so we would welcome your attendance if you are able to make it.

A number of children read lots of books over the holidays and this was evident with the number of holiday reading logs that were returned for the draw. Thank you for your support with this. This week we have a draw for those children whose photos were sent in with them reading. Many staff also participated in this programme and there will be a draw for them too.

At the end of the day the bell rings for the end of school at 3.00pm. Please make sure your children are picked up by 3.15pm. Children who are in the school grounds without parent supervision will be sent to the admin block steps. Teachers have meetings after 3.15pm, so we cannot take responsibility for your child after 3.15pm.

There are eighty students who are keen to play chess in our school. Mr G who is our new support staff member is a keen enthusiastic chess teacher and player and intends to start a chess club at lunchtimes. If you have a spare chess set at home that you no longer need we would love to use it.

And finally … THE COUNTDOWN IS ON .... 16 days to our Gala Day!!!! Thursday March 5th. This is an important date on our calendar and we need EVERYONE to help make the gala a success.

Thanks to all those families who have contributed so far to our Gala. Please see our Gala Countdown requirements later in this newsletter. Of course we will accept other things up until Gala Day.

All gala contributions areto be taken to your child’s class box in the hall foyer. Each item received wins 1 point towards their class; the two classes that receive the most points (pro-rata on number of children per class) wins a surprise lunch!!!

PLEASE NO clothing, damaged or broken second hand goods.

Have an awesome week.

David Macmillan, Principal.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Thanks to those students who were able to attend last Wednesday’s Commissioning Mass. It was great to have some student representation.

Classes are learning about Prayer and the different types of prayer at the moment. The five finger prayer is a neat way to remind kids who they could pray for. You can view more information here Five Finger Prayer . Quiet Meditation is also a form of prayer and classes will be using this also at prayer times. Luke 5:16 shows that just like you and me, Jesus needed a break from the demands of his busy life to recharge his batteries and spend time with his Heavenly Father.

Soon we will be moving into the season of Lent. This starts on Ash Wednesday and is a very important time in our Liturgical Calendar.

SPECIAL MENTION

Well Done Jessica Rowley!
Yesterday we received a phone call from Karen at Todd McClay's office on the corner of Ranolf & Amohau Streets.
Karen had been watching Jessica scooter home every day and was so impressed with how responsible and courteous she was crossing such a busy road. Every time Jessica would hop off her scooter, keep to the side to not get in other people's way, wait patiently for her green light to walk across. When it was time to cross, she would walk safely - still looking for cars even though she had the right of way.
Wow! What an amazing example to us all on how to be safe around our roads, Keep it up Jessica.

Congratulations Addison Wilkinson from Kakano 1!
Addison received the highest marks in New Zealand for her Jazz Dance Exam in 2019!
She also received 95% for her first dance exam!
What an amazing achievement, Well Done Addison.

If your child has achieved something special, sporting or otherwise, please email Leanne with a blurb and photo sports@stmarysrotorua.school.nz
