Newsletter No 37 27 November 2019

Kia ora,

Our Tamariki are performing in the Ahurei on Friday night. They have been practising for a while now and sound awesome. Thanks to Koro for tutoring the group and Sylvia who has been coordinating the group. I am very much looking forward to the performance. This will be the first time that the three Catholic Schools: JPC, St Michael’s and St Mary's will be performing together on the same night.

The Christmas Parade is on this coming Saturday. This year St Mary’s and St Michael’s are sharing the float. It will be great to have a Catholic presence in the parade. This year the Christmas Parade Rotorua Trust are looking forward to creating a uniquely Rotorua event with a new location - the Rotorua Government Gardens. The parade will start at 11am by the Energy Events Centre and make its way around the gardens. After the parade there will be many free activities for the kids, live entertainment, food vendors and a great time throughout the gardens and surrounding venues.

We will have a donkey ridden by Mary leading our float, accompanied by Joseph, Wise Men and shepherds. It would be quite nice to have a drummer boy too. If you have an appropriate costume for any of these characters please email me .
The rest of the children will be on the float which will be decorated as a stable. Children can come dressed as angels, shepherds and any clothes that might resemble people in Jesus’ era.

I will need a small group to help set up the float at school on Saturday. Once we are set up, the float will be driven to the Energy Events Centre and children can meet us there. I will also need people to help at the actual parade – six parents walking alongside the float and a few on board the float, dressed up of course. It would also be great to have some helpers dismantling the float back at school after the parade.

The parade starts at 11.00am so children need to be at the float by the Energy Events Centre by 10.30am dressed in their costumes. Children will need lots of sunblock and a bottle of water. The parade itself should last under an hour, so children can be picked up back at the Energy Events Centre from the float. All children will stay on the float until a parent collects them.

The Parade Committee is encouraging families to stay on after the parade for the free activities, live entertainment and eating from food stalls.

We had two girls’ cricket teams playing last week at the Mount. They played very well and I also received excellent feedback on their behaviour. The coach is trying to play in three tournaments next term. This is a great opportunity for our girls.

We are publishing a school magazine again this year, and this will be available during the last week of this term. There will be only 100 magazines printed and it will be a great memento of 2019. Orders will be taken now with the cost for the magazine being $5.00. Orders will be taken by your child’s teacher or the office. Be in quick; there will only be 100 printed.

On Thursday 5 December we are hosting the “Coaches’ Thank You” evening. It starts at 5.30pm in the school library and it is a special night when we can thank all our coaches. Invitations have gone out - but there is still time to RSVP Leeanne. We would love to see you all there.

Have a great week everyone.

Soon we will be moving into Advent. Advent is a season observed in many Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas and the return of Jesus at the Second Coming. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning "coming". View-Advent in 2 minutes and All about Advent.
The colour purple is used during Advent. The candles, Priests vestments, decorations and we use purple on our prayer tables now. It reminds us to repent and prepare. Purple is also the colour of royalty. The Advent wreath is also symbolic. Being circular signifies the eternity of God. The evergreen is the sign of life, and the four candles represent four weeks of Advent.

Next Thursday we have an Advent Liturgy at 10:00 hosted by Kakano Team; we would love to see as many of our parents and caregivers as possible if you can make it.

We had two teams attend the Girls Cricket Festival last week in Mount Maunganui. It was a fantastic day and well enjoyed by all. Well done girls!
Special mention to Jmarie Riini who was selected by the event organisers for showing great potential in cricket, in particular with her bowling.
Thank you to our fabulous helpers, we wouldn't have been able to attend this event without you.

The forecast for this event is looking great! We will have the school gazebo set up for shade, everyone is welcome.
Remember to have sunscreen, a hat, and water.
TIPS: Check your gear out the night before, is your bike seat the right height? tyres ok? Does your helmet fit? what will make transitions easier?
It's such a fantastic event, I look forward to seeing you there.

Kadin Martin loves TRYathlons, over the weekend Kadin competed in the Weetbix tryathlon at mount maunganui. He managed to finish the event even though his chain came off his bike and he had to run the last 100m with his bike, before doing his running leg. He is looking forward to this weekend's one here in Rotorua.
Awesome TRY attitude and determination Kadin!
