Newsletter No 33 30 October 2019

Kia ora,

Week 3 already. The weeks are rolling past. After the All Blacks were convincingly beaten on Saturday, I’m moving on and now looking forward to the cricket season.

Rosary today was led by Manuka with help from Kakano. We also had the opportunity to farewell Sister Carina. Sister has been in Rotorua now for sixteen years and has worked in different roles in both the parish and in our school. She has worked with groups of children helping them with reading, and with whanau as a social worker, working with particularly, Pasifika families. She is kind and very caring. Sister Carina would often pop into school to see children at play at lunchtimes and to catch up with the goings on in the school. I really treasured these catch ups. At our rosary we presented Sister with a gift and she was also presented with an Outstanding Service Certificate from the New Zealand Catholic Principals’ Association. Farewell Sister Carina. We are going to miss you here at St Mary’s.

You will all have received from the PTA, a book of raffle tickets. Please help our school by selling your raffle book. Every ticket sold helps St Mary’s in some way. If you need more tickets please either email Kelley at or see Shanelle in the school office.

We have All Souls/All Saints Liturgy in the hall at 10.00am on Friday. You are welcome to join us for this.

Please keep in your prayers Colleen Pinfold. Colleen’s husband John passed away last week. Colleen is a teacher here and co-ordinates the PPP reading programme in the school.

Kahikatea and Totara are having their Athletic Sports on Thursday. Thanks to all those who have offered to help. The response has been fantastic. We do have an awesome community.

Our working bee is this Saturday (November 2nd). There are a number of jobs that need to be done. The projects include painting, playground maintenance, concreting, cleaning gutters, stripping paint off aluminium doors, building picnic tables and pruning, This list is getting longer. I would really appreciate your support with this please. Come along and meet other parents, enjoy a morning tea and a delicious lunch. Children are welcome also.

Friday 15th November. Teacher Only Day. There will be no school on this day.

We encourage all of our students at St Mary’s to continue their Catholic faith journey and to consider being involved in the Sacramental programmes, focusing on Reconciliation, Communion and Confirmation. There are information evenings coming up for you to find out more about the Programme. These are on tomorrow, 31st October or 7th November at 7pm at St Mary’s Catholic Church. I have sent a letter home to all those children who are eligible to participate. PLEASE NOTE; At the briefing, dates will be given and fees of $20.00 are required to be paid. For children who were not baptised in Rotorua, please bring a baptismal certificate. The children are required to be 8 years old by the 1st November 2018. Children who are not baptised or who are baptised in another Christian faith and would like to become Catholic are required to book an appointment with Father Eamon through the Parish office to discuss options.

Malo e lelei everyone!

Junior teams ran the Rosary this week, a lovely Liturgy.
We also got an opportunity to say goodbye to Sister Carina. Sister’s presence will be missed but we have promised to ensure the Josephite Charism remains strong at St Mary’s and the values will be always part of who we are.
“Pray the Rosary every day in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary to obtain peace in the world . . . for she alone can save it.” (Our Lady at Fatima, July 13, 1917).

Pope Saint John Paul II suggested the recitation of the Rosary as follows: the JOYFUL mysteries Monday and Saturday, the LUMINOUS on Thursday, the SORROWFUL on Tuesday and Friday, and the GLORIOUS on Wednesday and Sunday (with this exception; Sundays of Advent and Christmas – the JOYFUL; Sundays of Lent – the SORROWFUL).

On Friday we celebrate All Souls and All Saints Day with a Liturgy at 10:00am. Students have been invited to write down the names of those they know who have died and wish us all to pray for. These names will then be taken over to the Church where they will be offered up for prayers also.

Lord, those who die still live in Your presence,
their lives change but do not end.
I pray in hope for my family,
relatives and friends,
and for all the dead known to You alone.
In company with Christ,
Who died and now lives,
may they rejoice in Your kingdom,
where all our tears are wiped away.
Unite us together again in one family,
to sing Your praise forever and ever.
