Newsletter No 28 11 September 2019

Kia ora koutou,

It is Maori Language week this week.

Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori

The chosen theme for 2019 is again 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’.

‘Kia Kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand English with its meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.

Thanks to our DRS, Bernie and the Junior Children for the great Mass on Friday. I was really impressed to hear that our children sang so beautifully. It was also an opportunity for us to welcome our new families to our school.

A small group from our Kapa haka group performed at a luncheon for the Marist Sisters who came from all over New Zealand and different parts of the world. Our children performed two waiata and a haka. It was very impressive indeed. Frank Ma a Year 6 student also performed playing the piano and clarinet. He has an exceptional musical talent.

Today Totara team had their speech competition. It was adjudicated by a former student and a very accomplished speaker herself, Orla Walsh, and our librarian Kay Hall. Kaitlin Pola was placed first, Jade Moller second and third was Madeline Smith. Congratulations children. I have been very impressed with all the children’s speeches. They all prepared speeches about taonga. Well done to all of you.

On Friday, Kahikatea team are having their poetry finals. All the best to the children involved in that.

We have a team entered in an Aquabotics Competition being held at the Aquatic Centre on Sunday. It is being run by the Rotorua Museum. We have a number of teams participating. All the best children.

This Friday 13 September the Student Council invite all students to participate in a "Wear your favourite colour" mufti day. Gold coin donation to help fund the purchase of resources being sent to St Paul X1 College, Catholic School in Samoa.

And a reminder that Thursday 26th September the PTA is running a disco for our children in our school hall.

Also JPC are hosting an information session on “Cracking the code and unlocking boys in Literacy” The session is on the 24th September at 7.00pm in their gym. The speaker is Marshall Diggs, who will share from his reservoir of experience as a Principal, PLD Presenter, Literacy leader and father of four. Not to be missed.

Unfortunately our Sports Coordinator, Catherine Elmiger, has resigned from her Sports Coordinator’s role. She has done a wonderfully professional job and her organisational skills have been top class. We will miss her in this role.

If you are interested in the Sports Coordinator position or know of anyone who might be, you can email Dorothy dorothyj@stmarysrotorua.school.nz by Wednesday 18th September with your expression of interest.

Kia pai tō koutou rā

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Hello Everyone,

Mass last Friday was wonderful. Father enjoyed the singing by the children and their responses were on cue! Classes are now into the Church Strand, and learning what the Church is. Some classes are hoping to do a tour of the church where they can have an opportunity to look closer at the icons, and images in a Church. Also to help explain the rituals that occur in a Mass and where those traditions come from.
Our St Vincent De Paul Liturgy is planned for later in the term. Our Shoe Box Appeal is going well. Thank you for your support for this. By the end of week 9 we hope to fill the boxes ready for collection.

Blessings,
