Newsletter No 24 14 August 2019

Kia Ora,

I just loved the Mary MacKillop Mass. The singing was great, the children’s responses and readings were loud and clear and there was a fun dramatisation of Mother MacKillop’s life. It was great to have Sister Carina join us for Mass. She was also able to spend time with children as they did their special Mary MacKillop activities.

Today we had a STEAM Extravaganza for our Totara, Kahikatea and Manuka teams. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths and our senior students led other students through a variety of activities. It was hugely successful and I must say I was very proud of the way our senior students stepped into their role as teachers. Thanks also to Bevan James who organised the day.

This week is Maths week and children are doing lots of maths problems in class. Most children will be bringing maths activities home to share with you.

Room 1 recently organised a Can Drive for the food bank. What a great service project. Over 350 cans were collected over the last couple of weeks and they were displayed in the shape of an angel.

Yesterday our Year 5 and 6 boys played in the Central Bay of Plenty Rugby 7’s Competition. They played with plenty of determination. I did manage to watch one of their games and was impressed with their skills, particularly as, for a number of the boys, it was their first time playing rugby.

On Thursday at 10.00am we have the Assumption of Mary Liturgy. You are welcome to join us for this.

A reminder that we have a Teachers’ Only day on Friday 23rd August, so there will be no school for our children on this day. We are joining other Catholic Schools from the Bay of Plenty to hear David Wells, International Speaker, Teacher, Catechist and Author. The day is being hosted by Aquinas College in Tauranga. Mary-Ann Roling from Glenholme After school Care will be available to offer care at St Mary’s. You can register by contacting her on 0211 215599

Have a good week.

Kind regards,
David Macmillan, Principal.

Kia Orana Everyone,

It was wonderful that Sister Carina was able to join us for Mary MacKillop day celebrations last week. She thoroughly enjoyed her morning with us.

This Thursday we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Assumption Day commemorates the belief that when Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, died, her body was not subjected to the usual process of physical decay but was “assumed” into heaven and reunited there with her soul.

Currently there is still opportunity for adults, and teachers to do the Alpha programme. Alpha is a parish tool for evangelisation based on hospitality, sharing and open conversation. The same Alpha content is run all over the world, by Christians of all traditions, and provides a common expression of proclamation, service and witness. Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, usually run over eleven weeks by lay leaders on behalf of the parish. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. No two Alphas look the same, but generally they have three key things in common: food, a talk and good conversation. Please let Andrea at the Church parish know if you are keen.

“We cannot forget that evangelisation is first and foremost
about preaching the Gospel to those who do not know Jesus Christ... Many of them are quietly seeking God, led by a yearning to see his face, even in countries of ancient Christian tradition. All of them have a right to receive the Gospel. Christians have the duty to proclaim the Gospel without excluding anyone.”
Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, 15
