Newsletter No 35, 8 November 2017

Kia Ora,

What a week we had last week and thank goodness the weather was perfect for our two major events.

The Athletic Sports ran smoothly thanks to some very slick organisation from our Teacher in Charge of PE, Lorna Dobson and the help from the staff. Thank you also to the hard working group of parents who helped on the day. Our school athletic team has now been selected and they will compete against children from a number of local schools.

The following day we hosted our Annual Grandparents/friends Day. It was estimated that we had over 300 visitors who came to Mass, enjoyed a shared morning tea and were entertained by our students at a mini performance. Our kids love the day and I trust our visitors did too. Father Eamon was impressed with the way our children sang and responded to his questions at Mass. Our staff were also impressed with our kids; aren’t they an awesome bunch. Thanks to our Director of Religious Studies Bernie Hall for organising the day and all our staff who supported Bernie.

This Friday we are having a MUFTI DAY. The theme for the Mufti Day is ’dress up as a book character’. The money raised from the mufti day will go towards supporting New Zealand’s Largest Christmas Party For Special Children. The SKY TV Special Children’s Christmas Parties in association with Manuka Doctor are the biggest events of their kind in New Zealand for special needs children and their families. They work closely with hundreds of charities, schools, community groups and government organisations throughout New Zealand to select these special children. The children invited are those who suffer from one of the following: life threatening illness, physical and intellectual impairment, domestic violence, or living in underprivileged circumstances. Please support this Special Christmas Party by sending your child in mufti. We ask children to bring a gold coin. I have pledged $500 from our school.

The Young Vinnies are also coordinating a ‘can drive’ and the cans will be given to the Vinnies food bank. It would be great if you could support this too.

And finally, Rachel Schuster is co-ordinating the ‘Angel Tree’ appeal. I have copied the letter which was sent home yesterday. It would be awesome if families could support this appeal too.

To St Mary’s parents, caregivers and community,
Last year our church community supported ‘Angel Tree’ which is a branch of the ‘Prison Fellowship of New Zealand’ (PFNZ), a Christian charitable organisation that was founded over 40 years ago. For 18 years PFNZ and angel tree have been making a difference at Christmas for children with a parent or grandparent in prison. This year, through our school community, we are hoping to support 80 local Rotorua children.
This is how it works and how you can help. By the end of this week a Christmas tree will be in the office foyer with 80 gift tags on it. On each tag is written a child’s name, age and a present suggestion from their caregivers. Gifts are $25 each, please support angel tree by taking a tag and buying a present. When you have bought the present, please bring it back to school UNWRAPPED and with the tag attached by Friday 1st December.
If you can’t get to the school office to pick up a tag, please text or phone me and a tag will be sent home in an envelope with your child. Angel tree would prefer that children didn’t select the tags to take them home.
Your support helps local Rotorua children receive a gift from their loved one at Christmas.
For any questions or to organise a tag to be sent home please phone Rachel Schuster on 0274461351
Thank you for your help and support,

The Rotorua Angel tree team

Grandparents/Special Friends Day was a huge success. Thank You for your support! This is always a special community day for our school. The students were particularly good at showing our visitors around and hosting the concert for them. The photos from the photo booth are available on Facebook. There are also lots on the class blogs.

Our Young Vinnies are now in full swing with a food can drive. Please send your child to school with a can of food for this. Mrs Todd and the Young Vinnies will be collecting them in.

Classes are now learning about the Holy Spirit Strand in our RE programme. The Holy Spirit was given to live inside those who believe in Jesus, in order to produce God's character in the life of a believer. In a way that we cannot do on our own, the Holy Spirit will build into our lives love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Rather than trying to be loving, patient, kind, God asks us to rely on Him to produce these qualities in our lives. Thus Christians are told to walk in the Spirit and be filled with the Spirit.
Bernadette Hall-Director of Religious Studies

A Special Mention

To Zachary Richardson, for his kindness towards others. I was coaching my flippaball team when I witness Zach heading towards a junior girl crying. He asked her what the matter was and her reply was that she couldn't find her friends. So Zach took her around the school to find them. Well done Zach.
