Newsletter No 33, 25 October 2017

Kia Ora,

Well, last week passed very quickly. The days seem to go much faster when the weather is good.

I would like to welcome Kay Hall to our staff and welcome back Courtney Marama. They are both working as Teacher Aides in our Junior classes supporting literacy: Rooms 7,9 and 10. Courtney is also completing her study to become a teacher and Kay has a passion for children’s literature and she has also had a lot of experience working in different public libraries around New Zealand.

We have some excellent news about some of our students lately.

Harrison Roberts-Brake was cast as Michael (the lead little boy) in Mary Poppins the musical coming out in March next year.

And from Claire Baylis from Swim Rotorua:
‘Your St Marys students competed over the weekend at the Central North Island Swimming Championships. Twenty-six swimming clubs brought teams, from Palmerston North to Auckland. These students were an integral part of the Swim Rotorua Team which for the first time ever won the trophy for the top club.
Aaron Muchirahondo (11yrs) won the 11&under 200m backstroke in an excellent performance where he dropped 5 seconds from his best time, and followed that up the next day with 1st in the 100m backstroke. Aaron also placed 4th in 50 back, 200 free, 200 breast and 100 IM. He was part of the 13& under relay team that placed 2nd.
Miki Joyce (11yrs) produced two gutsy performances in the breaststroke finals to place 2nd in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m.
Kaia Joyce (9yrs) made two finals in the 11& under age group, placing 6th in 200 Breaststroke and 7th in 200 freestyle. She was also part of the girls relay team that placed 7th.
Ariel Muchirahondo at only 8yrs also made an 11& under final in 200 backstroke, placing 5th overall.’

Congratulations to you all.

From this week, children are expected to wear their sun hats, so if children aren’t wearing a hat they will be sent to the school verandas. From next week sunblock will be available for children to use in the playground. We would prefer, when our days heat up, that you might be able to apply sunblock on your child before they arrive at school.

We have Student Led Conferences scheduled for Tuesday 31st October. These are for the Senior (Totara) and Middle (Kahikitea) teams. Classes have been learning about the rosary and we have been saying the rosary on Wednesdays as a school. The rosary is a special prayer and we begin each term with a prayer focus. Some staff began a RE paper on Spirituality last week. It is great to see so many dedicated staff wanting to learn more about the Catholic Faith and what it means to each of us personally. Catholics believe we are all on a faith journey. That journey is different for each of us.

Coming up..week 3: All Souls/Saints Liturgy 10:00am 2nd November in the hall.
Week 4: Grandparents/Special Friends Mass Friday 10th November.
Starts with Mass at 9:00am, followed by refreshments at the school and a mini concert from some of our different culture and sports groups. All most welcome!
