Newsletter No 31, 27 September 2017

It was lovely to have everyone back for the start of term. The weather seemed to be kind during the second week of the holidays; fingers crossed we might see the temperatures rising and less rain over the coming weeks.

Welcome to our new students and their families - Layla Tahana, Blake Needham, Sara Plummer, Freyja Waiomio, Angel Nelson, Zack Taylor,Nate Rowe-Hawkins, Riley Steers-Taeo, Carter Coffey, Rawinia Pereeti, Isla Adriaansz, Leah Benfell, Eli Tauiliili-Pelasasa, Makyla and Oliver Smith, Briar Rotherham, Neha Kurup and Faith and Marian Lopez. We hope your time with us is happy and that you enjoy all the opportunities for learning that you encounter during your years at St Mary’s.

A new ‘new entrant’ class was started at the beginning of the week. We welcome Nicola Riley-Groves to our staff as the teacher for this new class. Nicola has been teaching for a number of years and is a very well qualified teacher and has had leadership positions in previous schools too. Nicola has been doing some relieving in our school prior to this term. I am sure you will make Nicola feel very welcome.

During the holidays we learnt that three of our teachers were recognised as ‘Advanced Classroom Expertise Teachers’ by a national panel of education professionals. Congratulations to Sylvia Dunkley, Bernadette Hall and Bevan James.

We also learnt during the holidays that Ariahna Ngawhika was awarded a Te Arawa Rangatahi Achievement Award for Academic Excellence, and a Te Kotahitanga o Te Arawa (Te Arawa Fisheries) scholarship, at the 2017 Te Arawa Awards ceremony. This is an outstanding achievement. Well done Ariahna, we are all very proud of you.

Also during the holidays, three of our students played for Rotorua in a regional hockey tournament. Leah Field and Sara Stahlhut played in the Year 5&6 ‘A’ team, which placed first in their tournament, and Kayla Fox and Sophia Keeling played for the Year 5&6 Rotorua Development team
and they did very well too. Well done to you too, girls.
Next weekend, on Saturday 28 October, we are have a working bee at our school. We have a number of jobs on our list ranging from handy-man jobs, spreading cushion fall under the senior playground, maintenance on the senior playground, replacing rotten palings on our boundary fences, repairing the tops of our garden plots, putting up the shade cloth and I am sure there will be plenty more jobs to do. Come along and meet other parents, enjoy a morning tea and a delicious lunch. Children are welcome also. For catering purposes please let the office know if you can assist, even if it is for an hour or two.

I hope that our children were busy reading over the holiday break and have filled in their holiday reading logs. The weather over the holidays was ideal for reading. Logs need to be returned to school by next Wednesday so they can be included in the lucky draw. Lots of great prizes are up for grabs in the lucky draw.

The pool is in perfect condition for swimming. The water temperature is around 33 degrees, so it is warm. The pool is a great facility and we expect that children will have their swimming togs with them when their class is timetabled for swimming. Look at your child’s class blog to see if your child’s class is swimming for the week.

This month is the month of the Rosary. On Wednesdays we come together as a school for Rosary. Rosary is at 9.00am in the school hall, if you would like to join us. The senior school led us this week.

We would like all our school families to consider having their child make their First Holy Communion and Reconciliation. This is a notice from our parish.

The Sacramental Programme is for children who wish to make their First
Holy Communion and Confirmation and also a serious commitment to the
practice of their Catholic Faith. The enrolment is at St Mary’s Catholic Church 7.00 pm, 17th October and/or 24th October. There will be a briefing on the Sacramental Programme, dates will be given and a fee of $25.00 per child is to be paid either by cheque or cash. Children who have not been baptised in Rotorua will need to bring their baptismal certificate. The children are required to be 8 years old by 1st November 2017. Children who are not baptised and would like to become Catholics are also welcome to be a part of the Sacramental Programme.

Thank you all for sending your children in summer uniform this week. If you need more uniform you can purchase it from our shop or through our school website. You can order and pay online and pick up your order from the school office.

Summer Sport has started this week. We have a number of teams participating in the different summer codes. A big thanks to the parents and other whanau members who are coaching and managing our sports teams.

David Macmillan, Principal.

Please note that enrolment for the Sacramental programme is for children who wish to make their First Holy Communion, Confirmation and also a serious commitment to the Catholic Faith. The enrolment is at St Mary’s Church 7:00pm, and the next session is on 24 October. Your child needs to be 8 years old as of November and Baptised, or willing to be, to move onto making their next Sacraments.

Our parent information night on puberty lessons, will be on Tuesday the 24th October at 5-5:30 in Room One. The session will be an overview of what is covered in the Year 6 puberty lessons this term.

Also during October we will be saying the Rosary as a school each Wednesday-8:45-9:00. All welcome. The meaning of the Rosary is simply a Catholic prayer based upon the Bible that focuses on the events in the life of Jesus and that of Mary the Mother of Jesus. The Rosary is a powerful prayer to be used for all intentions.
