Newsletter No 27, 30 August 2017

Kia Ora,

It was awesome to welcome, as a school, the NZ Marist team last Friday. We had a powhiri to welcome this touring team. The children really put their heart and soul into the powhiri and we were lucky to have Kaumatua Rangi with us too. We do appreciate Rangi’s leadership and guidance. The players said the day at St Mary’s was awesome. Thank you Sylvia Dunkley for her meticulous organisation and thanks also to our Admin team, caretaker and awesome PTA who organised the tasty lunch for the visiting team.

Bethany, our Mandarin Language Assistant, took four of our students to the Regional Mandarin Speech Competition on Friday. By all accounts our students performed very well. Well done to Queenie Liang, d Vanessa Liang, Kris Zhang and Mackenzie James.

The Smart family have donated a voucher for a one night stay at the Rotovegas Motel for a lucky Dad. To enter the Father’s Day Competition the children have to write, “What is fab about my Dad”. Children can write their entry at home. Entries close on Thursday, and children need to hand their entry to their class teacher. The winner will be announced at Friday’s assembly.

The PTA are also selling Father’s day gifts at lunchtime over the next three days. The gifts cost $3.00 and children will have an array of gifts to choose from.

Our outstanding PTA have their AGM tonight at 7.00pm in the school staffroom. It would be wonderful if you could come along to the meeting. I would like to thank the PTA for the awesome work they do for our school.

Sadly, this is Annie Russell’s last week teaching at St Mary’s. Annie has been teaching over a period of eighteen years and her children have all been here at St Mary’s too. She is certainly a great teacher with a wealth of experience and knowledge. She also has been involved in sports’ coaching, teaching the dancers in our school shows, led curriculum teams and the list goes on. Thank you Annie for all you have done here at St Mary’s. Our very best wishes go with you as you take on your new position as RTLB. I’m sure we are going to bump into you through your work in this role.

Some of you have been wondering why we are asking for a sports uniform bond. The bond is for the touch singlets that are issued for the upcoming summer season. According to the touch rules, touch players must wear a numbered singlet, so school t-shirts will not be acceptable to the Touch Association. Cricket teams can wear their sports t-shirts. The reason for the bond is because we are continually chasing parents to return their child’s sports uniform to school. Often what happens, is that we start a season without the sufficient number of uniforms for the teams. Sets of uniforms are broken up because uniforms are either lost or sit in the bottom of drawers for months.. Every season over 50% of our uniforms are not returned on time and a lot of time is wasted retrieving them. Many uniforms are lost. The bond will be returned to you when the uniforms are returned to school in good order. If the uniform is not returned in a timely fashion the bond will be used to replace the non returned item. I hope you can understand our frustration with trying to keep track of our sports uniforms. In saying all that, there are parents who are excellent at returning sports uniform, but we will need to impose the bond for all.

Next Friday September 8th we will be celebrating the Nativity of Mary Mass at 9.00am. You are all welcome to join us for this. We will especially be welcoming new families to our school.

Have a great week.

David Macmillan, Principal.

This week Mr MacmIllan and I are attending the Diocese RE Conference here in Rotorua. This is a great opportunity to hear Bishop Steve and many great speakers talk and also to build the networks with our fellow Catholic Schools. Classes continue to focus on the Church strand and some teachers have planned mini tours of the Church to help solidify the real experience for students. Having time to fully explain the special features of the Church and answer some of the ‘why’s’ and ‘what’s’. I took Rooms 16 and 17 through yesterday and the questions the children asked showed they were aware of the meaning of many items in the Church. But it also allowed me time to explain several features and show them items they were not aware of-some great new learning!
Ask your child what they have been learning about Church.

ST MARYS APP - Download now

With Summer Sports ahead, please be sure to amend your settings to include the sport/s your child/ren is/are playing. The summer sports this coming season are, Touch Rugby, Flippaball and Cricket. Once you have downloaded, you will be sure to receive changes and/or cancellations etc....

I would like to take this opportunity to mention the sports teams for this summer. It seems some of the kids have been eager to get into summer sports and that great news. However the banter around teams has not been so great. Some of the kids have got it into their heads that they are in a team and some kids are not. Parents, please have a little word to your children about sportsmanship, as they can not always be on the same team that they have been in. I would also like to mention that teams have not been made up yet, so if your child comes home upset thinking they have been left out, please let them know this is not the case as the teams have not been selected yet and won't be until the end of the registration which is Wednesday 15th September.

Once I have made the team's up I will post on the ST MARY'S Website. My focus is primarily on Touch Rugby as this starts Wednesday 20th September. Please also note parents that I am hoping the new touch shirts arrive the week prior to starting touch, however should they not arrive, please ensure your child is in their PE Shirt. The first 2 weeks of Touch is Grading, so it will be fine to wear this. Once we start in Term 4, all touch playing students will be required to wear a touch shirt, as all playing students will require a number on the front and back of their shirts.

Summer Sports

Registrations for Summer Sports went out last Friday, if you missed out of a form we have extra at the office. You can also find the Information and Registration Forms on the St Mary's Website under the Sports Tab.

Please note that this year we have new Touch Tops. A bond will be required when registering for both Touch and Cricket. The cost is $20 per shirt issued. I have also noticed some of the registration forms that have been returned have not paid a bond. Shirts will not be issued until the bond is paid.

Sorry parents, there are just too many shirts NOT being returned.

The draw is on the St Mary's website for Cuattro, Cinco and Seite.

Rotorua Hockey website, click here should you need to know any additional information or for any last minute changes.

Draw is up on the St Mary's website - Still to come

The next time St Mary's is on duty is Saturday, 9th September at Puarenga Park. Would be great to see some new faces! I will send out an email closer to the date about what you can volunteer for.

Netball - Season is over.

Draws for both Wednesday and Friday are up on the St Mary's Website. Please note that the team playing the St Mary's Cougars will not be there this afternoon. So please check with the coach as to wheather you will still have a run on the court or not.

  • Teams that play on Wednesday are now: Cheetahs. Lions, Jaguars, Cougars and Lynx
  • Teams that play on Fridays are now: Panthers, Pumas, Tigers and Leopards.

There have been changes so PLEASE ensure you check the draw.

Please note that students playing miniball CANNOT wear tshirts or thermals under their playing singlets. They can wear a singlet under their playing singlet particularly those that have larger shirts that have been issued.
