Kia Ora,

Welcome back to Term 3! We have an action packed term planned with great learning experiences for our students. Our concept for this term is Cycles and the key understanding is Regular Repeated Sequence. Classes will study the concept in different learning contexts.

We welcome Caitlin Hollis to our St Mary’s teaching staff. This is Caitlin’s first appointment to a teaching position after graduating with a Conjunct degree: Education and Science. I know you will make her very welcome at St Mary’s.

Welcome to our new students who began this week at St Mary’s: Mahaki Dender, Kihi-James Beckett, Richard Zhang, Alexander Marsh, Emily Tane and Kim Peato. We hope these children and their families enjoy being part of the St Mary’s community. Please also make them feel very welcome.

Our Holiday Reading Programme has been running over the holidays. My hope is that we have had over 90% of our students participating in this programme. If you read to your child,please log it on the child’s reading log. Logs need to brought back to school by Wednesday 2nd August. We have lots of cool prizes for the lucky draw. All those children who participate are eligible to go in the draw for a prize.

For the last couple of years at St Mary’s, we have run Student Led Conferences. A SLC is a conference run by students, for their parents, about their learning. During the fifteen-minute conference, students present learning in different curriculum areas, as shown primarily in their portfolio or on their blogs. Students discuss the process of learning, and the progress they have made, with reference to their goals and the criteria against which their work has been evaluated.

SLC’s differ from traditional parent-teacher interviews in that they put the students at the heart of the reporting process. It is not like the old one-way interviews, where teachers do the majority of talking. In SLCs, teachers, depending on the age, confidence and capability of students, provide prompts and support for the student to explain their learning progress and next learning steps.

Student Led Conferences have traditionally been held at mid-year, and in Term 4, students undertake a Home Led Conference (where students and parents complete the process at home). National Standards data is provided to parents in a written report at mid-year and in an end-of year report if the child is in Year 3, 4, 5 or 6. Students in Years 0-2 receive a National Standards report after 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 months at school.

Our Student Led Conferences are scheduled for THIS COMING TUESDAY, 1 AUGUST from 3.15pm to 6.00pm. Our students should have brought home an invitation to you. Bookings are now open - see below for booking process.

Many of our children were involved in many different competitions over the holidays.

These children did very well at the Rotorua Speech and Drama Competition: Congratulations to Molly Bradley and Maiah Ngawhika who achieved 1st place for the Under 10 impromptu/improvisation. Molly came 1st place for Under 10 Individual Character and Maiah was 2nd equal for the same event. Molly also took out the top award for Under 10 year olds which was 'Most Promising Under 10' receiving the Laura Watson trophy. Aarav also won the Wicks Trophy for coming first in the small group drama. He also gained Very Highly Commended in Impromptu Improvisation and Character Recital. Well done children!!

I also received this email from Swim Rotorua:

I wanted to let you know about the great results from the Swim Rotorua swimmers who attend St Mary’s School:
Over the weekend Swim Rotorua Swimming Club made their annual trip to compete at the Taranaki Regional Championships. Three of the team were from St Mary’s School. All were competing in the 10 yrs and under age group:
Aaron Muchirahondo (10yrs) won a medal in all of his 10 events across all strokes. He won 4 GOLD medals in 100 and 200 back, 200 Breaststroke and 100 freestyle, 4 SILVER medals – in 50 breast, 50 back, 50 fly and 50 free and 2 BRONZE in 100 IM and 200 Freestyle.

Mikulash Joyce (10yrs) won 3 GOLD medals in 50 and 100 Breaststroke and 200 IM, SILVER in 200 Breaststroke and BRONZE in 50 Fly and was a finalist in 5 other events.

Karolina Joyce (9 yrs) who still has another year in the age group won SILVER in 50 Breaststroke, and 3 BRONZE medals in 50, 100 and 200 freestyle and was a finalist in 6 other events.

Because we do not have a library this year, a group of teachers have found a quiet indoor spot for children to go to and read or play games during lunchtime. We would appreciate any donation of books or games you no longer need. These items can be dropped in a box in the student foyer. Thanks.

And finally JPC has invited you to an upcoming information evening at JPC featuring guest speaker Tessa Gray from Core Education. Tessa speaks with many parent groups around the country about how to keep our children safe online at school and at home. She shares the power and potential of the Internet, but also highlights the issues and concerns and offers practical ways parents can be proactive about keeping their children/teenagers safe online. This is an informative, evocative and entertaining presentation. Be sure to tell your friends.

Please note that bookings for Year 0/1 are spaced to start at 10 minute intervals, and the remainder of the school at 5 minute intervals. Expect the Student Led Conference to take approximately 15 minutes.

Hello Everyone,

We hope you all got a great break with your families over the school holidays.

This term classes are completing their focus on the Jesus strand and after that we will move into the Church strand. Next week some senior classes will be involved with the Catholic Discipleship College who will be running a short workshop on prayer and the Eucharist with the children. This is part of our parish mission and has proven to be popular with other Catholic schools. Our class prayer journals will continue to circulate homes this term. Teachers are impressed with the variety of lovely prayers that are coming in so thank you.

BIG Thank you from Andrea Tuki at the Church Office, to those parents and staff members who provided meals for her recently when she broke her hip. It was such a wonderful, helpful gesture. She is now back at the office 4 days a week from 10am to 2pm.

Lost Property

We have a lost property box which is located outside Room 5. It is full to overflowing - again!!! On Friday we will have the lost property displayed at the back of the hall and we will leave it out until after Student Led Conferences next Tuesday - for students and parents to check. Any unnamed items still unclaimed next Wednesday will be disposed of.

One of our Golden Rules is that we look after property. One of the key competencies is "Managing Self". Please expect your child to take responsibility for looking after their own belongings at school.

It would be helpful if each family could ensure:
1) All items of clothing, footwear, lunchboxes and drink bottles etc are clearly named
2) Students are encouraged by parents to check for items of lost property

Our goal is to have an empty lost property box from next week - please help us to achieve this.

Kapa Haka:

Pasifika Group:
Pasifika practice every Friday at 11am in Room 15.If you enjoy learning songs and dances of other Pacific cultures come along. Mrs Wallbank is in charge of the Pasifika Group.

ICT Club:
Thursdays in Room 4. 12.30 to 1.15pm. For middle/senior students.

If you have a child playing winter sports for St Mary's - PLEASE download the app and ensure you check your settings to allow notifications for the sport/s your child/ren are playing. Eg Football, Hockey, Miniball or Netball. This way you will be sure to know about cancellations etc....

Coaches, Parents, please can you ensure your child is in the correct uniform. No trousers/trackpants under dresses. Warm clothing is fine pre, post games and subbing but not whilst playing.

Please note that students playing miniball CANNOT wear tshirts or thermals under their playing singlets. They can wear a singlet under their playing singlet particularly those that have larger shirts that have been issued.

2017 - ITM Junior Tough Guy and Tough Gal Challenge

ITM Junior Tough Guy and Gal Challenge
Friday 18th August 2016 (8:30am – 1:00pm)
St Mary’s School will be entering a team for the Junior Tough Guy and Gal Challenge. This is a chance for our kids to get involved in New Zealand’s biggest mud run series in a version tailored especially for them! The Junior Tough Guy and Gal Challenge will include many of the same amazing perks as the adult version, such as outstanding goodie bags, challenging obstacles, incredible venue, hot showers and spot prizes.

There are 2 Course Options

Ankle Biters 1.5km Course Option – For Year 3-4
Little Nippers 3km Course Option – For Year 5-6

Early Bird Fee $20 per child up until two weeks before the event (Friday 4th August)
Late Entry Fee $25 per child. Payment to be made on registering your child.
