Newsletter No 39, 12 December 2018

Kia Ora,

Hello Everyone,

Many of us have sat, or will sit tonight, in our transformed school hall to watch our children entertain us as they perform ‘Noah the Musical'. The show is absolutely fantastic and it does provide opportunities for the performing arts to shine. Not only is this show a demonstration of the fantastic dramatic talents of our students, but also a wonderful example of the talents, commitment, energy and passion of many staff and volunteers who worked together as a team. Special thanks to Bernie Hall, who is the director of the show. She has put in many long hours to ensure that the show was a success and it certainly is. Thanks Bernie and the huge team that supported you.

This coming Friday, we have our end of year Mass at 9am. This is an opportunity to be together celebrating the Eucharist, also to reflect on the year’s achievements, farewell our Year 6 students and award major prizes. You are all welcome to join us.

Tryathlon Day is Friday. Totara and Kahikatea will be participating from 11.00am and Kakano, Manuka at 1.30pm. Children can ride trikes, three wheelers and bikes, swim in the school pool and run around a course. We need parents to help with marshalling etc, so if you can help please let your child’s teacher know or email Lorna on lornad@stmarysrotorua.school.nz

The curtain falls on Wednesday 19th December on an excellent school year. May I sincerely thank you for the fantastic support we have received from you throughout the year. It has been much appreciated.

Thanks to all of the St Mary’s staff for the magnificent job they do in teaching and supporting our wonderful children throughout the year. Their tireless commitment to our school is awesome.

On Tuesday at 9.00 am we will hold our school prize-giving in the school hall. You are very welcome to attend. If your child is receiving an award on Tuesday, you will receive a notification with your child’s report. Reports will be sent home this Friday. I hope you all enjoy discussing your children’s progress with them. I was very pleased with the reports this year. The children have done particularly well.

Next Wednesday, we will commission our Year 6 students at a final assembly at 11.00 am in the school hall. Everyone is invited to attend. School finishes at 12 Noon. Please ensure you pick your child up promptly.

Early next week your child will bring home information about reading over the holidays. Children must READ, READ, READ during their time away from school. Some children’s progress can go backwards if they do not continue to read over the holidays. Please keep your child reading. Books also make great Christmas gifts! There will be a lucky draw again when the children return in Term 1. Lots of summer prizes: a kayak, swimming pool, inflatable toys, boogie boards, books and many other prizes.

Thank you to all of those who have donated to the St Vincent de Paul Foodbank. We are still accepting non-perishable food. We will hand the food over next week.

Once again we have produced a school magazine. It is a fantastic record of the year. The price is $5.00 and it is certainly good value. Thank you to Ricoh Copiers who sponsor this book. The magazine will be available next week but you must pre-order from the school office if you want a copy. Last year we ran out of magazines and some of our children missed out on getting one, so get your order in to avoid disappointment.

We will still collect gifts for Sister Carina to distribute to the needy at Christmas time, so if you missed out on the Angel Tree and you have a small gift please wrap it with a tag that says who it would be suitable for: male or female and the age of the child and place it under our tree. Thanks for your support.

Congratulations to Sheryl Todd for winning the MoreFM Rotorua’s Top Teacher Award and she was also awarded an ACET award from the Ministry of Education. The ACET is an ‘Advanced Classroom Expertise Teacher Recognition Award’. This has been an excellent week for Sheryl. Congratulations Sheryl and thanks to parents, former students and friends that supported the MoreFM nomination.

To those staff members and parents who are departing our school community, you go with our thoughts and prayers. Farewell to Athlene Wallbank who has been in senior management, team leader and teacher responsible for Maths and Pasifika. Athlene has been a very valuable member of our staff and I wish to thank her for her leadership and support over the two years she has been with us. I wish her well in her move to Auckland. Farewell also to Nikki Rowe who finishes her teaching role here to take up another teaching position in Rotorua. Nikki has been doing a great job in the Kakano area. We are going to miss them both and we wish them well in their future endeavours.

Bill Wright has been a wonderful teacher aide in Kakano. He leaves us as he departs Rotorua. We wish him well too. Thanks also to Lorraine Thomson for her teaching role in Kakano, also to Rebecca Brake and Millie Locke for their roles in teaching dance and drama to our children over the last three terms. We do hope to see them back in some capacity next year and thank them very much for their work at school this year.

Farewell to our Year 6 students. They have been a wonderful year group and we will miss them in the school. I hope they leave with fond memories of St Mary’s and that they continue to build on the skills and values we have nurtured in their time here at school. God Bless them as they continue their education at John Paul College and other schools.

I take this opportunity to congratulate all our students of St. Mary’s Catholic School. I wish them all a very happy, safe and enjoyable summer. Please be sure to take time as a family to talk, play, and pray together. I look forward to seeing you all in February.

Those families who are not returning to our school will continue to be in our prayers as they journey to new places.

May Christ be in your
Christmas and with each
family in the New Year.

Regards,
David Macmillan, Principal.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION - NOAH THE MUSICAL - A Monica Moore Production.

A ... H U G E ... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE NOAH PRODUCTION, SPONSORS, PARENTS, STAFF AND CAST. EXTRA SPECIAL THANKS TO BERNIE HALL WHO HAS MASTERMINDED THE WHOLE EXERCISE. SHE WILL BE DRIFTING AWAY ON THAT ARK FOR A REST AS SOON AS SHE CAN.

From our Director of Religious Studies

This Friday we celebrate our End of Year Mass at 9am. We also farewell our Year 6 students as they move on from primary school. Everyone is very welcome to attend.

As Christmas moves closer it is important to remember that in this time of Advent, we should take time to:
Pray-say a prayer to God, even during your busy moments-it helps us to pause and adjust our busy time.
Reflect-reflect on what this Christmas means for you. Be ready to acknowledge where and when we could have done more, for those around us.
Offerings-offer up something painful in your life.
‘Do what you can and leave the rest to God’. Mother Mary Mackillop.
