Newsletter No 03 20 February 2019

Kia Ora,

Hello Everyone,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of our Deacon, Deacon Mike Jones. Mike was our chaplain and often he visited the classrooms on a Wednesday and would come in for a cuppa with the staff at morning tea. Mike loved coming to St Mary’s and the children loved hearing about the different Saints in the Church. He would pick the Saint who had a feast day on the day he visited the class. Mike was a great storyteller and he could capture the attention of the children as he weaved a story around the Saint of the day. Before Mike became a Deacon he held many Principal’s positions around the country. Mike was on our Board of Trustees as a Proprietor’s Rep and his views were respected by all on the board. He was gentle, wise and had a strong sense of social justice. I enjoyed the many chats we had together and I found the advice and support he gave me invaluable. He is a man we are going to miss in our community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Irene, who was always by his side and his whanau. His daughter Whaea Eliana taught at our school for a few years. Mike’s funeral is at 11.00am at St Mary’s Catholic Church, then he will travel to his marae at Waiohau and his burial will be on Saturday.

Last Friday we had our first school Mass. Thanks to those who joined us for this. For our first Mass for the year, I think our children joined in with the prayers and sang very well. Our staff received a special blessing for our year ahead.

On Monday we had our ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening. Thanks to those parents who were able to come, but if you couldn’t get a time slot to meet with your child’s teacher, feel free to contact them and set up another time.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Thank you to those who were able to attend our school Mass on Friday. At this Mass we blessed our school staff for the up-coming year. New students will be formally welcomed at our next Mass, an invitation will go out to families.
This week classes continue to focus on prayer and learning how they can use different types of prayer. Older students are being encouraged to find in the bible examples of times when Jesus prayed.
Traditionally, Catholic prayers fall into four types:
Adoration: Praising God.
Contrition: Asking for God's forgiveness.
Petition: Asking God for a favor.
Thanksgiving: Showing God gratitude.

CHANGES IN PE UNIFORM
From this year we are starting a gradual change from the PE blue T-shirt (with house emblem)to a generic top that will be used for physical education, sports days, as well as some sports teams.
The new tops are very similar to our current hockey team shirts.
This change will mean a rise in cost (to $38). During this transition period the current t-shirts in stock will still be available, with the new version also available for purchase. (no further blue t-shirts will be ordered).
We are expecting that by the beginning of 2021 the complete change-over to the new top will be in place.

Online Uniform Sales: Uniforms are available online via our website using paypal.
