Newsletter No 19, 21 June 2017

Kia Ora,

Today is the shortest day; Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. The good news is that now the days will start getting longer again. Bring on Spring…...

We did have a very busy week, last week. The city was certainly buzzing with the Lions Rugby team being town. Thanks to those who were able to take their children to the Giant Haka on Saturday morning. It was a memorable occasion and it was fantastic that we were part of the record breaking haka.

We have our own “Lions’ promotion”. We are encouraging our students to spend more time on the Maths’ Whizz, Reading Eggs and Lexia programmes online. The children earn raffle tickets when they reach a certain time on any of those programmes. The more tickets they earn, the more chances they have of winning one of the awesome prizes which were donated by the New Zealand Rugby Union. One class has already gone through one of their raffle books. The promotion finishes at the end of the term, just before the 3rd All Black Test.

Thank you to the parents who check the class blogs weekly. There is always important information for you on the blogs.

Tomorrow is JPC Open Night:

NEWS FROM JOHN PAUL COLLEGE:

OPEN NIGHT will be held on Thursday 22nd June at 4.30pm (new start time) commencing with tours of the campus. We have sent application forms home with your child and information is available on the college website www.jpc.school.nz. The deadline for applications is 30th June. Application forms MUST BE RETURNED TO ST MARY'S not JPC.

Yesterday our runners ran in the Interschool Cross Country. Congratulations to all our runners, but particularly these students who were placed in the top ten place-getters: Leah Field (3rd), Cyris McDonald (10th), Brendon Caley (9th), Riley Parkinson (10th), Darcy Ferguson (6th) and Lola Telfer (7th), Thanks to the parents who helped with transport, marshalling and supporting our children. Thanks also to Anne Cato and Sheryl Todd for coordinating the event.

Tomorrow we have four teams competing in the EPRO 8 at Rotorua Intermediate. I wish the teams all the best. It is a fabulous competition based around collaboration, problem solving and engineering. Anne Cato has been involved with training these teams.

On Friday is our Mass of the Sacred Heart at 9.00am in St Mary's Church. At this Mass too, all our new entrants will be formally welcomed and will receive a pair of rosary beads. Parents and families of these students are particularly encouraged to join us at Mass.

We also have a large group of gymnasts at Te Puke competing at a Gymnastic Competition. These competitions are usually a lot of fun and I wish our students all the best. Thanks to the parents who are going to be accompanying the teams.

Please keep Wednesday 28th June free for our annual cultural dinner. It is usually a great affair. It is ‘bring a plate of food for a shared dinner’. It is helpful if you also could bring a serving utensil for your dish. We always ensure the variety of food at this wonderful evening. It starts at 5.30pm and it is usually all over by 7.00pm. There will be some cultural performances and some children will talk a little about their country. It should be awesome.

Enjoy the week.

Regards,
David Macmillan, Principal.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Guten Tag!

Over the next couple of weeks Middle and Senior classes are finishing the God Strand and beginning the Jesus Strand. We will continue with this strand next term.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart Mass is on Friday.

The "great apparition," which took place on June 16, 1675, during the octave of the Feast of Corpus Christi, is the source of the modern Feast of the Sacred Heart. In that vision, Christ asked St. Margaret Mary to request that the Feast of the Sacred Heart be celebrated on the Friday after the octave (or eighth day) of the Feast of Corpus Christi, in reparation for the ingratitude of men for the sacrifice that Christ had made for them.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents not simply His physical heart but His love for all mankind. See how Jesus points to his heart ..inviting us to come back to Him.
