Newsletter No 17, 7 June 2017

Kia Ora,

This weekend is a very special time for our 56 children who are being confirmed and will also be receiving their First Holy Communion. Some of our children will be celebrating this at St Michael’s Church at 5.00pm Vigil Mass on Saturday and a large group at the 5.00pm Mass on Sunday at St Mary’s. It is an extremely important event in a Catholic family's life and can be marked with celebrations and family gatherings. Please keep these children in your prayers:

On Monday evening, a large group of our children will be performing at the JRock Stage Challenge at the Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre. Stage Challenge and J Rock is performed by local schools throughout NZ and can be a highlight for many students throughout New Zealand. It is promoted as a performing arts spectacular that can create long-lasting memories for all those involved. It is an event which gives students the opportunity to showcase their skills in dance and drama. For many months our children have been working hard and practising their performance for the big night on Monday. A big thank you to our Director Rebecca Daniels from Lakes Performing Arts, and Lilly Russell, Georgia Lovegrove, Josh McGrath, Erykha Levae and Georgia Howard from JPC who have been coaching our children, Fee Teat for designing and organising our set, Api Waititi for building the set and Annie Russell for being the teacher coordinator. Tickets for the show can be purchased online from TicketMaster.

On Friday we farewelled Brigit Nieuwboer and on Tuesday Kaumatua Rangi, Leon Volshenk, Whae Eliana and a group of students supported her at a powhiri at Mokoia Intermediate. Thanks to the parents who helped out with transport. Next Monday we welcome Lorna Dobson to Room 6. Presently she is teaching at Lynmore School.

This week we welcomed Amelia Mark and Junior Doel to Room 10. We hope these children and their families enjoy being part of the St Mary’s family.

We have been donated a number of excellent Lions' Tour souvenir prizes from the NZ Rugby Union. Children can have the opportunity to win these prizes by earning special tickets. They earn these tickets by spending time each week on Math’s Whizz, Reading Eggs or Lexia programmes. Children can log into at least one of these programmes. Please encourage your child to log on to one of these programmes at home. They will also be working on these at school.

The British and Irish Lions are touring the country playing rugby against a number of our Super Rugby Teams, Maori All Blacks and of course three test matches against the All Blacks. The Lions play the Maori All Blacks in Rotorua on Saturday June 17th. There are a number of special activities going on during this time.
This is a message from Martin Croft, the Events Manager from Events & Venues Rotorua:

Hi Schools,
Hopefully you will have heard about the Giant Haka, happening on June 17th as part of Rotorua’s Lions celebrations.

We want your school to be part of it!

Imagine being part of a World Record, with all of your students wearing their uniform with pride.

In two week’s time, the British and Irish Lions will take on the Maori All Blacks at the International Stadium in Rotorua. We are very proud to be a host in the series, and we look forward to entertaining the many thousands of people who are expected in the city over the weekend.

During the week leading up to the game and over the weekend itself, there are many events and activities organised, most of which are free to attend. For details on these, and other information relating to the Lions tour in Rotorua go to…

One of the highlights of the weekend itself will be the Giant Haka. A Guinness World Record attempt at the most number of people doing the Haka at the same time. This event takes place on game day, Saturday June 17th and we would like your school to be part of it.

The event will open to the public at 10.30am with entertainment and activity for you to enjoy. We encourage everyone to get there early as we would like everyone in place before the Haka begins at midday. To enter the event you need to bring a ticket with you. There will be tickets available on-site so don’t panic if you forget to bring it or haven’t got one. We will do our best to get tickets to your school in the next few days.

The Rotorua Boys High School will lead the Haka from the front, with support from Te Arawa leaders.

We are expecting a huge attendance. 6200 are required to break the record but we hope more than 10,000 people will be there on the day.

Regards, Martin Croft.

This is exciting and a great thing to support. I will give you more information about it in next week’s newsletter.

Enjoy the shortened week.

David Macmillan, Principal.

Thanks to all those who were able to attend last Wednesday's information night on What it means to attend a Catholic School. I hope you did gain something from it and it helped clarify some of what Catholic Schools do and what we are about. This weekend we have 58 students making their next steps in their personal faith journey. These children will make their Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation on the weekend. This morning we recognised those students with a special wee gift. This was to remind them of their promises made and to reassure them that they have a whole community behind them as they move forward in their faith. Well done children we are very proud of you all!

Again, thanks to the volunteers who co-ordinate and run this programme and Father Amon and Father Tovio.
