Talofa lava! ...
Greetings to you during Samoan Language Week...

Last week we celebrated Pentecost at our Mass on Friday. Thanks to those students who led us in prayer and song. Thanks also to the parents/whanau who were able to join us for this.

We were also lucky to have a fine day for our cross country run. Well done to all the children who ran in the race at the Redwoods. Thanks to Trudy and Sheryl Todd for organising the event and all the staff who assisted on the day. Thanks also to the many parents who helped with transport. Congratulations to our winners:

A number of our students were fortunate to be able to participate in Marimba workshops yesterday. Our children were joined by students from Horo Horo, St Michael's and Seventh Day Adventist Schools. The workshop was organised as part of Music Month and the workshop was run by a group of experienced musicians. Thanks to Jill Walker for organising this for us.

During the weekend of June 10th and 11th, 56 of our students will be Confirmed and making their First Holy Communion. This is a very special time in these children’s faith journey and I ask that you pray for them as they make their final preparations.

A reminder that we have a Parent Information Evening on ‘The Catholic School’ TONIGHT at 5:30-6:30pm in Room 14. The meeting is for parents new to the school, parents intending to send their child on to JPC and anyone who would like to know more of what is taught/expected at a Catholic School.

At the end of this week we farewell Brigit Nieuwboer. Brigit has been a teacher at St Mary’s since 2005 and, as well as being a teacher, she has taken on a number of different leadership roles within the school over these years; led the Literacy, Science Curriculum team, SENCO and Team Leader in the Middle and Senior School. Brigit has been a wonderful teacher and leader and she will be remembered for her hard work, gentle, approachable manner and her professionalism and commitment to teaching. Brigit starts at Mokoia Intermediate from Monday and I am sure you will join me in wishing Brigit all the best in her new position.

Sylvia Dunkley will be taking over Room 3 and the Senior Team Leader’s position for the year, from Monday 12th June.

We have had two teams representing us at the Rippa Rugby tournament today. They had a fantastic day - making the semi-finals. Thanks to Eliana Maxwell who coached the two teams and Trudy for managing the teams on the day. Great to see the parent support down at the park too.

J-Rock is getting very close now and our children have been practising hard over the last couple of months. We have been lucky in that we have had five John Paul College students choreographing and teaching the dances. Rebecca Daniels from Lakes Performing Dance Studio has been directing the show. Thanks also to Api Waititi for building the frame for the set and Fee Teat for organising the backdrop. The show is scheduled for Monday June 12th. Tickets for the show go on sale via ticketek very soon. Students involved do not attend school that day. Instead they are to meet at 10.00am to 9.30pm at the Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre. Please note that anyone involved with J Rock has the option of a late start on the Tuesday morning following (11 June). Please either start at 8.45am or arrive at 10.30am for a 11.00am start.

School photos are scheduled for 16 June and information/envelopes with ordering photos will be sent home this week.today. Please do not leave the ordering of these photos to the last minute. Last year we had lots of parents bringing their envelopes in on the day. The organisation on the day is already hectic without having to contend with a large number of late orders.

Fingers crossed for fine weather for this weekend’s sport.

Have a great week.

David Macmillan,
Principal.

2017 Rippa Rugby

Wow what a fantastic day had by both our teams today. Both years 3/4 & 5/6 teams play hard and fair, both making the semi's and unfortunately just missing out on the finals this year. But that's ok as the kids all played well under the referee's (at times ill) calls. Another massive thank you to Eliana for coaching both teams and at times having to run between the fields to support our players.

Cross Country

As you would have seen from the results above, last Friday we had our annual Cross Country run in the Redwoods Forest. Well done to all our kids that participated. The rain held out and splinters of sunshine shone through. I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to our parents who helped not only with transport but with the marshalling of this event.

Those children that have made the Central Bay of Plenty team for Cross Country, well be advised shortly on what day and time this event will be taking place.
