Newsletter No 12,3 May 2017

Kia Ora,

Hello Everyone,

Wasn’t the weather perfect for our children's school holidays? I hope children were able to get out and enjoy their time on holiday. I heard many stories of some of the different and exciting things children got up to in the last two weeks.

Thank you also to parents for sending children in full winter uniform. A very timely decision given the temperatures this week. Just a reminder that black shoes form part of the winter uniform - black leather lace-ups preferred or shoes with buckle. No sandshoes or sports shoes.

I hope that children were also able to get plenty of reading done during the holidays and have entered their stories onto their holiday reading logs. Children are to bring their reading logs back to school by next Wednesday (May 10) to go in the lucky draw for a prize. The draw will take place on Friday 12th May.

You would remember that our last day of term was a little hectic with school closing early because of the impending storm. All children were picked up by 1.00pm; thank you for your ready response. One way we can communicate important messages to you is through our phone app. These phone apps can be downloaded from the Apple and Android store.

On the last day of term we had a Mufti Day to raise money for Edgecumbe. Even with many children away we raised $688.00. That is impressive. Thank you.

We were well represented at the ANZAC parade and Civic Ceremony on ANZAC day. Thanks to the parents who also joined us for the event. Two of our students laid a wreath on our behalf at the ceremony. Thanks everyone. We had our own ANZAC liturgy at school on Monday and I was very impressed with the respectful way our children conducted themselves during the ceremony.

We welcome Katherine Brolly to our staff. Katherine is teaching in Room 14. Prior to teaching here Katherine taught at St Mary’s Putararu and schools in England. Please make her very welcome and if you have a child in Room 14, perhaps you could pop in and introduce yourself to Katherine.

On Monday, staff and members of our Kapa Haka group attended a powhiri at Otonga Road School for Margot Nielson and other new staff at Otonga. The children performed beautifully and it was a lovely welcome for Margot.

Athlene Wallbank is the new team Leader for Kahikatea (Middle team). Athlene has been with us since the beginning of the year. She has a wealth of experience in leadership. She has previously been a team leader at other schools and more recently a Deputy Principal in an Auckland school before coming to St Mary’s.

This Friday we have over 200 students participating in the Mini Marathon. I hope our children enjoy running in this event. Thanks to the parents who will be down at the Events Centre supporting the children. Good luck to all those parents who are participating in the Rotorua Marathon this weekend.

Friday, 26th May we have our Pentecost Mass. Mass is at St Mary’s Church at 9.00am. We would like your support for this Mass please.

Later on Friday (26th May) is our School Cross Country at the Redwoods. This involves our Year 3 to 6 students only. The event is to start at 1.00pm. More details will be sent home shortly. The Junior Cross Country date has not been confirmed as yet.

A huge thank you for Integrated Systems Design and the McCowatt Family for their very generous donation of the pig for our gala. Our apologies that they were missed from our original list of Gala Sponsors. It was a huge contribution and we are very sorry we missed acknowledging them for their generosity.

Have a great week everyone.

David Macmillan,
Principal.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Welcome back to another term. This week we held our ANZAC liturgy and Rooms 3 and 4 hosted our Resurrection liturgy. The students led these liturgies well with prayers, readings, song and reflection. Over the next couple of weeks students will be looking at prayer and recognising the power of prayer in everyday situations. Classes have been encouraged to start a class Prayer Journal. Your child will bring this home one night. Please create a prayer or poem or reflection, signed from your family and whanau. This book will then be a resource to be used for morning prayers by the class throughout the rest of the year.

Thank you for your generosity for the flood victims last term. Our school raised $688 - a fantastic effort for a couple of days notice... so THANK YOU AGAIN!
