Newsletter No 9, 29 March 2017

Kia Ora,

Hello Everyone,

All our students have returned safely from their class camps. I have received so much positive feedback about the camps from children, parents and teachers. Thanks to all the parents who helped us with camp, teachers for leading the camps and to Team Leader Brigit Nieuwboer who coordinated and organised the accommodation and camp programme with the facilitators for all four camps. I would like to think that we will be returning to this marae again in 2019. Next year our Year 5s & 6s go together to Auckland for their camp.

Over the next few weeks our children will be involved in Liturgies which lead into Easter.

  • Stations of the Cross. Thursday 6th April. 10am St Mary’s Church.
  • Palm Procession. Friday 7 April. School Grounds 10am.
  • Washing of the Feet. Thursday 13th April. 10am School Hall.

Please also take advantage of the Church Services during Easter and take your children to services at St Mary’s or St Michael’s. Easter is one of most sacred events on our Catholic calendar.

Yesterday our Year 1 students from Rooms 7 & 11 lead the Annunciation Liturgy. It was a wonderful liturgy and I was very impressed with these children’s confidence in presenting. Well done children. Thanks to the many parents and grandparents who were able to join us.

Next Wednesday is a Mufti Mania Day. All Catholic Primary Schools participate in this, usually at the end of Term 2. Money raised goes to projects in the Pacific Islands facilitated by Caritas, a Catholic Agency. Please support this fundraiser by sending a gold coin with your child.bringing a gold coin.

Saturday 1st April is Annual Pasifika Fun Day which will be held at the Village Green, Rotorua Lakefront. It is organised and run by the Rotorua Pacific Islands Development Charitable Trust.

This year is the first year that the Trust has asked for schools to be involved. Various primary, intermediate and secondary schools in Rotorua are taking part, including our Pasifika Group at St Mary’s School. We are scheduled to perform at 11.25am. This is another great opportunity for our Pasifika group to perform and showcase the different Pacific cultures we have at our school. Come and support our group. There are many food stalls there as well.

A number of our summer sports teams have finished or are finishing their season over the next week or two. Some of our teams have reached semi-finals and finals. I wish them all the best with their games.

We farewell the Life Education team, Harold and Bernie Volschenk, at the end of the week. The children have been involved in many worthwhile learning experiences. Ask your child what they have learnt. Thanks Bernie for the enthusiasm and passion you put into your teaching.

J Rock registrations have been sent home. The registration fee has now been reduced to $20 in order to be more affordable. We have decided the children involved do not need t-shirts and the school is going to help with part of the registration fees. I do encourage children to participate in this. It is a great experience. Practices started today and they are being taken by four enthusiastic John Paul College students.

For our parents of Year 6 students, JPC’S OPEN NIGHT is on THURSDAY 22nd JUNE at 5.00pm. Please put this date in your diary if you or someone you know is considering enrolling a child at JPC next year. JPC has considerable pressure on its roll so it will be important to attend and complete enrolment forms early. Forms will be sent home to you very shortly. PLEASE NOTE: All enrolment forms are to be sent back to ST MARY'S SCHOOL OFFICE.

In the last week of this term we have scheduled three-way conferences with you, your child and their teacher. These will take place between 3.15pm and 6.15pm on Monday 10th April and Tuesday 11th April. We will advise you when bookings are open.

Father Eamon has asked that I include this information in our newsletter:
INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
For those parents (and grandparents) who may be interested in becoming Catholic, during the month of May we will begin the Inquiry Period for the RCIA.This is the best time of year to join the RCIA which gives those who start a full year of formation in preparation to enter the Church next Easter. You are invited to come and learn about the Catholic Faith. This will run weekly on Thursday nights commencing Thursday 11th May 2017 for four weeks until 1st June at 7.00 pm at St. Mary's, corner of Seddon and Ranolf Street. For further enquiries, please email Fr. Eamon Kennedy at freamonkennedy@gmail.com

Have a great week.
David Macmillan,
Principal.

नमस्ते Namaste,
Rooms 7 and 11 hosted our Annunciation Liturgy this week and they were wonderful! The Annunciation is also referred to as the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the Christian celebration of the announcement by the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus. The important thing that Teachers emphasise with students about the Annunciation, is the fact that Mary said, ”YES” to what God had asked of her. This reminds us also to be open to saying “YES” when we are asked to do things we may find difficult but know are the right things to do. The Young Vinnies have a ‘Mufti Mania Day’ scheduled for the 5th April. This is to raise funds for Tonga, specifically for access to fresh water for the island. Tonga is part of our Caritas focus. Your Child’s RE book should be coming home this week, if not last week. So please find some time to listen to what your child has been learning in Religious Education.
