Next Thursday is our GALA DAY. Prayers please that we get a beautiful fine evening. Our Gala Day is a really awesome community night, so I encourage you all to come: invite everyone you possibly can. The Gala starts at 4.00pm and finishes at 7.00pm. Thanks to all those families who have contributed so far to our Gala. Please see our Gala Countdown requirements later in this newsletter. Of course we will accept other things up until Gala Day. This year the cake decoration competition for Year 5 & 6 students will not be taking place on gala day due to space constraints.
Points to note - No fresh cream items please; cake boxes will be given out to all students for our coffee and cake stall and items will be priced by our PTA.
Baby Elephant includes – children’s toys, sports gear, CD’s, DVD’s, puzzles, games, lego, books.
PLEASE NO damaged or broken second hand goods.
All gala contributions to be taken to classroom as each item received wins 1 point towards your house; the class that receives the most points (pro-rata on number of children per class) wins a surprise lunch!!! The class that brings in the most cakes also wins a special prize.
Yesterday our Young Vinnies organised a lunchtime Disco to raise funds for the parishioners of St John’s Church after their lovely Church was burnt down. The students did a great job and raised $250. Awesome work Guys.
Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. Our school is hosting a Liturgy and the distribution of Ashes at 9.00am at St Mary’s Church. Everyone is invited to join us.
On Tuesday our Swimming Sports will be held at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre on Tarewa Road in Rotorua. Our Year 3 – 6 students need to be dropped off at the Aquatic Centre on the day to meet their teacher by 8:45am. Swimming sports will finish at approximately 2:30pm. Children need to be collected from the Aquatic Centre by 3:00pm at the latest.
Children may come to swimming sports in their house colours, they may wear their bathing costumes under their clothes. Children will need – togs & towels, sunhat, sunblock, warm clothes, lunch & a drink. There will be no sausage sizzle at the swimming sports this year. Children need to bring their lunch and a drink. Should the event need to be cancelled this information will put on our website by 7:30am and a notification sent via Facebook, Twitter and the school phone app. Thanks to those parents who have offered help on the day. If there is anyone else that can help please let Maggie in the office know. A progamme will be attached with this newsletter with indicative times of the swimming races on it.
Last weekend two St Mary’s students represented the Bay of Plenty as part of the Swim Rotorua Team at the NZ Junior Swimming Festival. Both were new to competing at this level and they did an outstanding job. Aaron Muchirahondo won the GOLD medal in the 50m backstroke with the fastest 10 yr boy time in NZ of 37.39. He followed this with a SILVER in 100m back. He achieved top ten places in all his other 8 events, including 4th in 50m Breaststroke. Karolina Joyce displayed excellent team skills as well as performing well in the pool. She placed 12th in her 200m breaststroke, and raced an outstanding 100m Individual Medley dropping nearly 10 seconds off her time. Well done to Aaron and Karolina.
Enjoy the busy week ahead, and again, prayers for fine days for the Swimming sports and Gala Day.
We look forward to seeing everyone at our school gala 4pm – 7pm on Thursday 2 March.
Thank you for your kind support.
David Macmillan, Principal.
Every week our teachers are posting to their class blogs. At the beginning of the week the class teacher posts a notice for the week and later in the week there are postings to share classroom learning and events.
We would like to encourage all our families to view the class blog for your child/ren at least once a week. We also welcome comments on blog postings. In our blog settings we have tried to make it very easy for you to make a comment this year. You don't need a login to make a comment. All comments do get viewed by the class teacher before they are published on the blog, so expect a delay before it is published ( eg if you post a comment one evening it may not appear until after the teacher has seen it the next day).
This week we have checked our blog stats. The blogs of Room 1, Room 3, Room 4 and Room 18A are currently our most viewed 2017 class blogs, with 1335 - 1496 views each. We have noticed that many class blog weekly updates for this week have been viewed by over 20 people - but it is a little disappointing that in some classes it is obvious that quite a number of parents have not viewed the weekly update. Could we please encourage you to visit the class blog each week. We'd love it if you also sometimes posted a comment.
If you have a smartphone we would like to strongly encourage you to sign up for our school phone app. We are able to send notifications via the app eg we can let you know if the swimming sports are postponed, a sports practice is cancelled etc. You don't reply to a notification - but you can select which notifications you wish to receive. See the following link for some assistance if you are not sure what to do. If you want help to download the app Anne Cato will be in the Meeting Room, by the student counter at the School Office, from 8.15 - 9am on Thursday and Friday this week.
