Hello Everyone,

We have had an excellent start to the year, although I know for some children the change of routine from holiday mode to school mode has been a bit of a challenge.

A big welcome to our new students:
Daniel Brosnahan, Leah Field, Calvin Tio, Rory Tapsell, Carlee Neilson-Annett, Teresa Wang, Lukas Lienaw, Rebecca de la Rocha, Amaria Winiata, Andrew Antony, Te Haeata Thrupp, Henry Terry, Makahae O'Connell, Samuel-James Maguire, Peyton Erskine-Shaw, Lika Peato, Caden Connor, Charlotte Sims, Ariena Rayner, Rushil Kumar, Kaea Anderson, Alexis Roper, Angela Umadhay, and Matilda Claxton.

A number of children read lots of books over the holidays and we will be having our lucky log draw on 23 February. Children can keep reading and adding to their logs up until this cut off time. If you have been reading stories to your child, that counts too. Just write the story on the holiday log. Please continue to support your child/children reading at home.

Our librarian, Ruth O’Leary, has enrolled for a Teachers’ Training Course with the Canterbury University. She will graduate at the end of the year as a teacher, as she already has a university degree. We all know that she will make an excellent teacher and we wish her all the best with her studies. Ruth will still be working at our school during the year.

Remember to look at your child’s class blog. Each week the blogs are updated with important class notices and class work. You can access the blogs by going to our school website: www.stmarysrotorua.school.nz or you can now access the blogs on our school phone app. You will need to download the app first: Android : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nz.school.stmarysrotorua

Guten Tag!
The children began the school year on a very positive note last week. The teachers were impressed with how well everyone listened and participated in our school Liturgies. The photos below are of our school treaty students signed to agree to follow the Golden Rules. The senior students are setting a great example to our newbies and junior students at our school gatherings. This week I got to ‘walk through’ our classrooms to see their RE set up. It is wonderful to see all classes have a special space aside for RE displays and for prayer and they are are all different!

This Sunday the Sacramental Programme resumes for those students who began this journey last term. Please keep them in your prayers.

Our first school Mass is this Friday-10th February. We will welcome our new families and students to our school community at this Mass. All welcome.

God Bless, Bernie Hall DRS.

Message from our School Health Nurse:

To Parents/Caregivers
Hi my name is Becs and I am the Public Health Nurse (PHN) for St Mary’s Primary School. I work with a group of Registered nurses who work with families, the community, teachers and schools to ensure children are healthy and ready to learn.

The Public Health Nurses in the Rotorua area are assigned primary and intermediate schools where we work closely with the teachers and staff.
We are available to support children, young people and their families to navigate through health care, social agencies and services. We can also provide health information and advice.
We work closely with schools as well as visiting families and whānau in their homes for follow up and helping them access the support they need.

Children learn best when they are healthy and feel good about themselves.

St Mary's School contact is Mrs Anne Cato, or ring the office/teacher or PHN office if you have any concerns about your child’s health and development. Feel free to contact me directly on 3437747.

Congratulations to the Winiata family, Lilly Room 17 and Amaria Room 18 on the arrival of a new baby sister "Eden". Wishing you lots of good times ahead.

Our condolences and prayers are extended to the Adlakha family on the death of their grandmother in India.

Rose Bannan has lost her scooter. It was left at the front of Room 14 on Friday - purple and black with purple handle bars. MADD Brand. Please see the office if you can help. Thank you.

Touch Rugby

Touch Rugby remains an ever popular summer sport at St Mary’s and we look forward to a fantastic season this term. Teams play six aside with a number of subs throughout the game. Due to an overwhelming number of
children wanting to play last year, we will try to limit teams to between 8 to 10 players as a way to ensuring all children get a decent amount of time on the field.

All players are required to wear St Mary’s maroon school PE shorts and must wear sports
shoes (shoes they can run in) NOT sandals and NOT bare feet. Numbered school singlets
will be issued to coaches for players to wear at their weekly games. All school singlets
must be returned at the end of the season, otherwise invoices will be sent out for the cost of a
replacement. School sports tops will be issued to players to wear at their weekly games. Students must come to the office to collect and sign for their sports shirt.

The Touch Rugby season commences on Wednesday 15th February to Wednesday 5th April 2017, at Kuirau Park. Games start from 3:45pm depending on the weekly draw.

The fee for Term 1 will be $30 per player payable at the school office with the registration form.

Cricket is played at Smallbone and Ray Boord Parks on Devon Street on Thursdays after school from 3:45pm.
There are four categories for players up to Year 6 -
Have a Go (Year 0 – 1) no fees Super Six (Year 2 – 4)
Incrediball (Year 4 – 6) Hardball (Year 5 – 6) played Saturday mornings

Fees are set by Rotorua Cricket. For term 1, 2017 the fees are $30.00 per child for the season. The cricket season covers through to the end of Term 1 2017.

All cricket players are required to wear St Mary’s maroon school PE shorts and must wear sports shoes (shoes they can run in) NOT sandals and NOT bare feet. School sports tops will be issued to players to wear at their weekly games. Students must come to the office to collect and sign for their sports shirt.

Every child who wishes to play cricket needs to submit a registration form.
For more information regarding cricket, check out the website www.rotoruacricket.co.nz which will have draws, results, cancellation and lots of photos and other information.

Cricket fees are payable at the school office. Term 1 cricket starts this Thursday 9th February 2017. If your child played last year and is keen to play again in Term 1, please let me know ASAP.

Coaching is a great way to enable our children to learn the ropes and develop skills in their chosen sport as well as a way to get to know our St Mary’s community. Support and advice for coaching in the various sporting fields will be available prior to and throughout the term. Without coaches our children are unable to participate in these fun, character building activities.

If you are able to help out with coaching or know someone who can help, please contact Trudy James, School Sports Coordinator tel 07 3491701 ext 210 or email sports@stmarysrotorua.school.nz
