Newsletter No 37, 22 November 2017

Kia Ora,

We had a fantastic assembly last week. It was run by our Pasifika Group and they entertained us with some great action dances and songs from Samoa, Fiji, Rarotonga and Tonga. Many thanks to Athlene Wallbank, our Kahikitea Team Leader and Pasifika Tutor, and Rachel and Ezra Schuster who taught the children an action song from Samoa. The children performed beautifully and I was very proud of them.

The building programme is underway FINALLY! The planning for the project started over two years ago. Due to roll growth, we are entitled to two new classrooms. The new classrooms will be attached to Rooms 9 and 8. I am looking forward to their completion. Our Kaumatua and Father Eamon blessed our building site on Friday. Our Ahurei group and the RE Leaders were part of the group and sang beautifully. The builders have arrived this week. The area from the Ranolf St Entrance, back of offices between Rooms 8 & 9, back of Rooms 9 & 10, and in front of Room 8 & 9 is now fenced off. The builders are trying to minimise the disruption to us as much as possible. They will also be upgrading our staffroom and offices upstairs and expect the staffroom to be completed at the start of Term 1. The new classrooms are to be ready for the start of Term 2.

There is a Christmas Tree up in the office foyer. This tree is the ‘Angel Tree’. The following letter explains what the Angel Tree is all about. We have only 19 more gifts left to be bought. If you can help please drop into the office and pick up a tag which lists what you can buy for a specific child. Our community has been very generous supporting this project.

To St Mary’s parents, caregivers and community,
Last year our church community supported ‘Angel Tree’ which is a branch of the ‘Prison Fellowship of New Zealand’ (PFNZ), a Christian charitable organisation that was founded over 40 years ago. For 18 years PFNZ and angel tree have been making a difference at Christmas for children with a parent or grandparent in prison. This year, through our school community, we are hoping to support 80 local Rotorua children.
This is how it works and how you can help. By the end of this week a Christmas tree will be in the office foyer with 80 gift tags on it. On each tag is written a child’s name, age and a present suggestion from their caregivers. Gifts are $25 each. Please support angel tree by taking a tag and buying a present. When you have bought the present bring it back to school UNWRAPPED and with the tag attached by Friday 8th December.
If you can’t get to the school office to pick up a tag, please text or phone me and a tag will be sent home in an envelope with your child. Angel tree would prefer that children didn’t select the tags to take them home.
Your support helps local Rotorua children receive a gift from their loved one at Christmas.
For any questions or to organise a tag to be sent home please phone Rachel Schuster on 0274461351
Thank you for your help and support.
The Rotorua Angel Tree team.

St Mary's and St Michael's have entered a Christmas float in the local Christmas Parade. The parade is Saturday 2 December commencing at 4pm. A letter will be going home tomorrow inviting children to be part of our float. If you can help sew costumes please let me know. Thank you.

The Young Vinnies are also co-ordinating a ‘can drive’ and the cans will be given to the Vinnies food bank. It would be great if you could send a can or dried food item to school with your child. The goods are being collected by classroom teachers.

The Ahurei is on this Friday. Our Tamariki are performing in this. They have been practising for a while now and they sound awesome. Thanks to Koro for tutoring the group and Sylvia who has been coordinating the group. I am looking forward to the performance.

Yesterday we had twenty seven students competing in the CBOP Inter-School Athletics Competition. Thanks to Trudy for managing the team and the parents who helped with the gazebo and supported our athletes.

Thanks to the Year 2 parents who came to our parent meeting last Thursday evening. We had a good turn out of parents and feedback has indicated that parents found the evening very worthwhile. Information folders will be sent home today for any Year 2 families who were either not at the meeting or didn't collect the folder issued at the meeting.

If any families want to access the latest Chromebook deals suppliers are offering to our Year 3-6 parents, check out the information in the Elearning section of the A-Z Guide under Our School on our School Website

We are publishing a school magazine again this year, and this will be available during the last week of this term. There will be only 100 magazines printed and for $5, it will be a great memento of 2017. Orders will be taken now and the cost for the magazine is $5.00. Orders will be taken by your child’s teacher or the office. Be in quick; there will only be 100 printed.

Tomorrow we are hosting the “Coaches’ Thank You” Evening. It starts at 5.30pm in the school foyer and it is a special night when we can thank all our coaches.

St Mary’s have two trained swimming instructors - Jack Weston and Jess Gordon - giving year 5 and 6 students swimming and water safety lessons for free in the mornings for two weeks. This opportunity has been made possible by the ‘Making the Difference Water Safety’ programme run by Rotorua Lakes Swim School and Swim Rotorua Swimming Club.

Monday 27 November is a Teacher Only Day. There will be NO school for our children. If you need care for your children on Monday you can contact Mary-Ann Roling on 347 0709 or 0211 215599.

Enjoy your week.
Regards,David Macmillan, Principal.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Remember - photos from Grandparents/Friends day are available on Facebook. There are also lots on the class blogs.
Students are learning about the Holy Spirit. Ask your child if they can name the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will build into our lives love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Some students in the middle school have been keeping a log of how they show these different gifts in their typical school day.
Have a look at the these links:

Bishop Barron on the Holy Spirit

Purpose of the Holy Spirit

Students enrolled in the Sacramental Programme have already had a few lessons. It is wonderful to see the children at Mass with their caregivers. Let’s remember to pray for them as they embark on this personal journey of faith.

Blessings,
Bernadette Hall.
