Newsletter No 34, 1 November 2017

Kia Ora,

I was absolutely over the moon with the way people just poured into school to help at the 'working bee' on Saturday, despite the drizzly weather. So many parents and grandparents showed up to help us. We must have had well over 60 people who came to assist! There were many children there too and they were also most helpful. We got all the jobs done, plus more than we wanted to get done including erecting 75 m of fence on the church/field boundary, new swimming pool fence completed, mountain of softfall spread on the senior playground, playground platforms were replaced, top of garden boxes in our vegetable garden area were replaced, painted veranda posts, gardening, cleaning windows, guttering cleaned out at the back of the school, shade cloth up, turf fence repaired, swimming pool shade cloth water blasted, pet area cleaned up, some of the outdoor bench seats stained and our new playhouse painted. The PTA also provided a yummy morning tea. A huge thank you to Glen Orbell, a parent and builder for Urbo Homes, who came into school on the Friday, with his worker James to build the swimming pool fence and he was also our foreman for the boundary fence build and the completion of the swimming pool fence on the Saturday. It was amazing how quickly that fence went up. Glen also negotiated for some free building supplies from CARTERS for the project. Thanks Glen. Phil Haines from Pita Pit also donated some delicious wraps for morning tea. Thanks to them too. It was a great school community event and I must say we do have an awesome community.

There are some parents who couldn’t make it on Saturday who have volunteered to help fix up things around the school at a later date. Thank you to you too, we will certainly take up your offers of help.

We heard some excellent news from JPC. The new leaders for 2018 have been appointed and two of them are our former students: Julia Florence is Head Girl and Te Ohongaake Swanson Hall is the Deputy Head Boy. Isn’t that fantastic? This year’s Head Girl, former St Mary’s student, Teresa McLean has been an awesome leader.

Student Led Conferences were held yesterday. Thank you to the parents who came to these. It is important you see what your child has been doing at school and also the goals they have set for themselves for this term. The junior teams (Kakano and Manuka) are having their Student Led Celebration on Thursday November 30th.

Years 3-6 Inter House Athletics is this Friday 3rd November 8:45-2:30pm. You are very welcome to attend this event. It is on at the Rotorua Athletic Track which is next to the stadium. We are still looking for parents to assist us on the day. If you are able to help please email Lorna Dobson in Room 6. lornad@stmarysrotorua.school.nz
If your child requires a sausage and juicy lunch they will need to be ordered on Thursday with their teacher.
Please note that if the event has to be postponed a posting will be made on the website and school app by 7.15am on Friday.

Grandparents/Friends Mass and Picnic is on Friday 10th November. The day starts with Mass at 9:00, followed by refreshments at the school, then a mini concert from our various school groups. Hopefully the weather will allow us to have the concert outside on the field. Please invite Grandparents and Grandfriends to this day.

All Souls/Saint Liturgy is this Thursday at 10:00 in the hall. Our children have been invited to write names of their loved ones who have passed away. Children are bringing the names to the liturgy and will be placed in a basket. These names will be taken to the Church where they will continue to be prayed for.

Our building programme starts in the middle of November. There will be no disruption to classes, as the builders will be working away from the classrooms. One of the classrooms is housing all our library books and they will need to be shifted out for a term (middle of April). If you have a dry space to store the boxes of books please let me know. Presently we have some containers to store furniture, but they are too damp to store our books. Our library will be reinstated at the beginning of Term 2.

A reminder that we have a Teacher Only Day on Monday 27th November. There will be no school for children on that day.

Just an advance notice. I have entered our school in the Rotorua Christmas Parade again this year. Mark it in your calendar, as it is usually great fun for the children. So dust off those angels, shepherds, wisemen, Mary, Joseph outfits for the parade. Hopefully we will have the donkey again too. The date and time is 4.00pm Saturday 2nd December.

Have a great day and please pray for a fine day for Friday for the Athletics.

Have an enjoyable week.

Regards,David Macmillan, Principal.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES

This Thursday we have a liturgy at 10:00am in the hall for All Souls and All Saints Day. Students have been invited to put names forward of their loved ones who have passed. The names will be collected and then we can collectively pray for them. Later in the day the basket of names will be taken to the Church where they will continue to be prayed for.
All souls need our prayers as we will too, when we pass.

Also this week the Emmaus icon will be at St Mary’s Church on Thursday. Classes will make time to visit it and say a prayer. The story of Emmaus is one our Bishop is using as the diocese focus this year on spirituality. The icon is travelling around the diocese. Whb.cdh.nz.
Bishop Hudson from the Diocese of Westminster is coming to talk at St Mary’s Church on the 4th November at 11:30. He is here to help facilitate ‘With Hearts Burning’ alongside Bishop Steve. Lunch provided!

The Emmaus Story: This story describes the encounter on the road to Emmaus and the supper at Emmaus, and states that a disciple named Cleopas was walking towards Emmaus with another disciple when they met Jesus. They did not recognize him, and discussed their sadness at recent events with him.

Week 4: Grandparents/Special Friends Mass Friday 10th November.
