Newsletter No 30, 20 September 2017

Kia Ora,
We all had a great week last week celebrating Maori Language week. I have seen some really great photos and activities that went on in our school last week. I would have really liked to have been at Room 7’s assembly. The children really looked as if they were enjoying every minute of it.

Well I can’t believe how quickly this term has gone. It won’t be long before the children will be on their spring holidays. I really do encourage that all our children keep reading over the holidays. If your child is not old enough to read then it would be awesome if you could read to your child everyday. Kids love hearing their parents read to them.

We intend to have another holiday programme running during the October break. We had over 80% of our children reading during the winter holidays. We have awesome prizes for this time. A real summer theme with boogie boards, skim boards, flippers and snorkels with heaps of other cool prizes. Children need to bring back their reading logs in the first week of Term 4 to qualify to be in the lucky draw. That reminds me, I owe Room 2 class pizzas for last holiday’s efforts. This has been a ten week term and next term of 9 weeks is going to go extremely quickly. There is some fantastic stuff going on at the City Library over the holidays too. Click on this link.

It is Disco time again. The PTA has put a lot of effort into this, so it would be awesome if lots of children come and dance the night away. Just a reminder from the PTA, if you bring your pre-schooler you must be with them for the night. The disco starts at 5.30 (not before) and finishes at 7.00pm. Please ensure you are at the hall to pick up your child by 7.00pm. The PTA still need helpers.

We have five staff going to the MacKillop Colloquium at Mission Bay in Auckland. They will be joined by other teachers from other MacKillop Schools in New Zealand. The colloquium starts on Sunday and runs through to Tuesday. All the best to our teachers who will be participating with this.

On Thursday our Community of Learning Principals’ selected a new principal to lead our seven Catholic Schools ( JPC, Aquinas Tauranga, St Mary’s Tauranga, St Mary’s Putaruru, Edward Gaines Tokoroa, St Joseph’s Opotiki, St Michael’s Rotorua, St Thomas More Mt Maunganui and us). Patrick Walsh has stood down as the project Leader and our COL is now being led by Kath Joblin from St Thomas More, Mt Maunganui.

The Sacramental Programme is for young people who wish to make their First Holy Communion and Confirmation and a serious commitment to the practice of their Catholic Faith. The enrolment is at St Mary’s Catholic Church 7.00 pm, 17th October and/or 24th October. There will be a briefing on the Sacramental Programme, dates will be given and a fee of $25.00 per child is to be paid either by cheque or cash. Those who have not been baptised in Rotorua will need to bring their baptismal certificate. Those who are not baptised and would like to become Catholics are also welcome to be a part of the Sacramental Programme.

Cool To Korero( See information flier for this event attached with this newsletter)
Tuesday, September 26th , JPC will be hosting an evening with Mike King, who will be tackling the very sensitive and topical issue of youth suicide. This is sure to be an outstanding presentation so please mark it on your calendars. The venue is the Edmund Rice Centre at JPC and entry is by gold coin donation. Please note that this event is being promoted within the wider Rotorua community with high attendance expected, so come early to ensure your seat.

A REMINDER: Summer uniforms are to be worn after the holidays. Our uniform shop is open for you to purchase uniforms; Monday, Friday 8.30 - 9.00am and Wednesday at 2.30 - 3.00pm.

We intend to have a working bee on the second Saturday after the holidays: 28th of October. There are a number of jobs that need to be done: maintenance of the senior playground, swimming pool fence on the church car-park boundary and Church Boundary fence. I would really appreciate your support with this. Children are welcome and we will have a BBQ lunch.

2017 Class Placement: This year we would once again like to give you the opportunity to have some input into decisions regarding the placement of your child/children in a class for next year. A letter was sent home last week attached to a ‘2018 Class Placement Form’. The deadline for return is Friday 29th October. Please return the form, in a sealed envelope addressed to the Senior Management Team, to the blue return box in the student foyer area of the School Office.

An advance notice that on Monday November 27th our staff has a Teacher Only Day. There will be no school for our children on that day.

Have an awesome week.

Regards,
David Macmillan, Principal.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Sawadika,
Please note that enrolment for the Sacramental programme is for children who wish to make their First Holy Communion and Confirmation and also a serious commitment to the Catholic Faith. The enrolment is at St Mary’s Church 7:00pm, 17th October and the 24 October. Your child needs to be 8 years old as of November and Baptised or willing to be, to move onto making their next Sacraments. Please bring a copy of your baptismal certificate if you were not baptised at St Mary's. There will also be a fee of $25 to cover materials.

In the past the Church has had rich contributions from the likes of St Vincent de Paul,Catholic Women’s League, Legion of Mary, etc. Today many of these organisations struggle to find members. What’s changed? What sort of organisations do we need today?

Blessings,
Bernadette Hall-DRS

SINCERE condolences to the family of Isaiah Kilgour (Room 14) who lost their paternal grandfather recently. Our prayers are with you all.

Touch Parents you should have received an email yesterday advising that Touch for St Mary's will start Wednesday 27th September (next Wednesday), Touch Shirts still haven't arrived yet, so please ensure your child is in their PE Shirt. Our first game of Touch is Grading, so it will be fine to wear this. Once we start in Term 4, all touch playing students will be required to wear a touch shirt, as all playing students will require a number on the front and back of their shirts.

Touch Teams have been made up, however they may be tweaked over the next few weeks. I will be putting these up on the website before the end of this week. All 11 teams now have coaches.......Yay.

Summer Sports

Registrations for Summer Sports is now closed. However you are welcome to fill out a registration form and go on a waitlist. Should we get enough players then we can enter another team. You can find the Information and Registration Forms on the St Mary's Website under the Sports Tab.

Please note that this year we have new Touch Tops. A bond will be required when registering for both Touch and Cricket. The cost is $20 per shirt issued. I have also noticed some of the registration forms that have been returned have not paid a bond. Shirts will not be issued until the bond is paid.

Sorry parents, there are just too many shirts NOT being returned.

Touch Rugby

OK we were all very eager to start this week, but ALL teams will start Wednesday 27th September.
I will update the St Mary's website on the SPORTS Tab/Sports Draw page when I get the draw.

I did send an email out yesterday morning if you DID NOT receive this email, please let me know. Trudy email: sports@stmarysrotorua.school.nz
