Kia ora Koutou,

This week we, as a nation, celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori – Māori Language Week.
The theme for this year is Kia ora te reo Māori, which not only picks up our national greeting but means literally, ‘Let the Māori Language live’. All our classes have been busy involved in learning the Reo and also a focus on te Kainga Maori. At assembly on Friday a special guest will be speaking to our children. The steam puddings that were made and sold today were scrumptious. Thanks to our Whanau Roopu.

Thank you to those who were able to join us for the Nativity of Mary Mass last Friday. It is really great to see our children leading prayer during Mass. Weren’t our little ones awesome?

The School Disco is all set for next Thursday 21 September. The discos are an awesome evening for our children. The Discos are organised by our awesome PTA and they would like to hear from you if you are able to help on the night. The contact is Lynda Fox - lyndamfox@gmail.com

Last weekend was the the last day for most of our Hockey teams. Unfortunately the weather was not great, so a number of our teams didn’t end up playing. Thanks to our hockey coaches: Dirk Stahlhut, Dave Blundell, Phil Edwards, Rachel Schuster and Sarah Benfell. The children have had a great season, thank you. The football was cancelled, so the teams go straight into a knockout tournament this weekend.

We welcome the Dental Therapists to our school. The mobile dental caravan will be at St Mary’s for a couple of months and will examine every student's teeth. Students will be called out from class when it is their turn. Please return the dental forms that were handed out to children as soon as possible to the office.

I know there are only three weeks to go until the end of the term, but it is important to make sure that our children are in the correct uniform. At this time of year shoes do fall apart, nevertheless, please replace the broken shoes with shoes that might be a size bigger ready for next year’s wearing.

Students are to start Term 4 in full summer uniform. Our Uniform Shop is open Mondays (8.30-9.00am), Wednesdays (2.30-3.00pm) & Fridays (8.30-9.00am) during term time. The girls’ summer dresses are currently only available from our school uniform shop.
Summer uniform is:
Boys - Grey drill shorts and a royal blue short sleeved polo shirt.
Girls - Blue check dress.
All students need a royal blue sunhat.
Feilding red woollen school jersey
Black sandals for footwear (no socks to be worn with sandals).

We also sell school uniform via our school website. You can order and pay online and pick up your uniform from the school reception after you have been notified by email that the uniform is ready to pick up. Hopefully it will be easier for those parents who find it difficult to get to our uniform shop.

We intend to have a working bee on the second Saturday after the holidays: 28 October There are a number of jobs that need to be done: maintenance of the senior playground, swimming pool fence on the church car-park boundary, and the church boundary fence. I would really appreciate your support with this. Children are welcome and we will have a BBQ lunch.

2018 Class Placement: This year we would once again like to give you the opportunity to have some input into decisions regarding the placement of your child/children in a class for next year. A letter will be sent home this week, ‘2018 Class Placement Form’. The deadline for return is Friday 29 September (last day of Term 3). Please return the form, in a sealed envelope addressed to the Senior Management Team, to the blue return box in the student foyer area of the School Office.

Have a great week.

Regards,
David Macmillan, Principal.

Sacrament ... Hakarameta ... Hah-cah rah-meti-tah

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Tēnā koutou,
We celebrated Mass on Friday-the Nativity of Mary. Classes all did follow up of this Feast day back in class. Thanks to those who were able to attend. Watch out for your child’s RE book, it will be coming home sometime over the next couple of weeks. Please comment in your child’s RE book. Next term the Sacramental Programme will begin. Now is a good time to consider if you would like your child to receive their next Sacraments.

So what is a sacrament? Many people think the sacraments are a pledge or dedication of our lives to God. However, the sacraments are actually much greater and bigger than that. They are not so much things we do for God but are actually the means God uses to bless us. We will keep you informed of the dates.

Blessings,
Bernadette Hall-DRS

the Church Office will only be open 9am - 2pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).

SPORTS NEWS :

ST MARYS APP - Download now

With Summer Sports ahead, please be sure to amend your settings to include the sport/s your child/ren is/are playing. The summer sports this coming season are, Touch Rugby, Flippaball and Cricket. Once you have downloaded, you will be sure to receive changes and/or cancellations etc....

My focus is primarily on Touch Rugby as this starts Wednesday 20th September. Please also note parents that I am hoping the new touch shirts arrive the week prior to starting touch, however should they not arrive, please ensure your child is in their PE Shirt. The first 2 weeks of Touch is Grading, so it will be fine to wear this. Once we start in Term 4, all touch playing students will be required to wear a touch shirt, as all playing students will require a number on the front and back of their shirts.

Touch Teams have been made up, however they may be tweaked over the next few weeks. I will be putting these up on the website before the end of this week. We will need coaches for some of our teams. If you are avaliable to help or know of someone that can help (perhaps an older student) please let me know. Teams requiring coaches will also be on the SM website.

Summer Sports

Registrations for Summer Sports is this Friday, most teams are full now so if your registration comes through and the team is full we will waitlist until there enough players to create another team. You can find the Information and Registration Forms on the St Mary's Website under the Sports Tab.

Please note that this year we have new Touch Tops. A bond will be required when registering for both Touch and Cricket. The cost is $20 per shirt issued. I have also noticed some of the registration forms that have been returned have not paid a bond. Shirts will not be issued until the bond is paid.

Sorry parents, there are just too many shirts NOT being returned.

Hockey

The draw is on the St Mary's website for Cuattro, Cinco, Seis and Seite.

Rotorua Hockey website, click here should you need to know any additional information or for any last minute changes.

Football

Draw for grades 9,10 and 11 is up on the St Mary's website

Due to the weather last weekend the last games for grades 5,6 & 7 are now over. For Grades 8,9,10 & 11 there is this weekends Knockout Tournament. All games start at 9:00am and if you win then you proceed to the next round.
Our Grade 8 Robin's will not be playing this weekend.

Netball - Season is over.

Miniball

Draws for both Wednesday and Friday are up on the St Mary's Website.

  • Teams that play on Wednesday are now: Cheetahs. Lions, Jaguars, Cougars and Lynx
  • Teams that play on Fridays are now: Panthers, Pumas, Tigers and Leopards.

There have been changes so PLEASE ensure you check the draw.

Please note that students playing miniball CANNOT wear tshirts or thermals under their playing singlets. They can wear a singlet under their playing singlet particularly those that have larger shirts that have been issued.

A Special Mention

As we start ending the winter season of sports, I would like to make a special mention to all our coaches. Without your help our teams would not be able to play. I have heard great stories of great wins and the not so great losses, albeit great to have losses as it teaches our kids humility. I am also proud to hear of the great sportsmanship our players have, so great work coaches your efforts never go unnoticed.

Team Photos

Many thanks to parents who have been sending through the team photos. I have been uploading them as I have received them. Take a look and those teams who have team photos missing please snap away so we can see them standing proud in their St Mary's Sports Uniforms. We will also use many of them for the end of year - Yearbook.
