Newsletter No 24, 9 August 2017

Kia Ora,

On Friday we celebrate St Mary ‘of the Cross’ MacKillop’s feast day. For those who do not know, Mary MacKillop started the Sisters of St Joseph. It was these sisters who started St Mary’s 151 years ago. The school, when it first started, was called St Michael’s and was next to St Michael’s Church at Ohinemutu. The school moved to its present site here on Carnot St in 1956 and was renamed St Mary’s in 1958. There have been a number of Sisters who have taught over the years and we are very fortunate to have Sister Carina with us in our parish and she often comes in to visit our children and staff.

On Friday we celebrate Mass together and you are very welcome to join us at 9.00am. There are a number of activities focusing on Mary MacKillop’s work that the children will be involved in. The day will conclude with an Inter-house Chalk Drawing Competition. Some classes have organised a shared lunch. There will be NO sausages sizzle or juicies sold on Friday.

Last Friday, the Holiday Reading draw took place and what a lot of excitement. Over 80% of our children participated in the programme over the holidays. That is fantastic. Thank you for your support in encouraging your children to read. A number of children were lucky to win a prize and for those children who read seven books, a pizza voucher will be sent home by the end of the week.

On Monday the school was very fortunate to have The Minstrel and Mrs Minstrel present the ‘The Hiwi the Kiwi’ fishing show. It was very entertaining and the show had a strong sustainability message. The children had lots of fun. You can view photos of the show on our school facebook page.

I am not sure if I have mentioned it, but Tim from Sport Bay of Plenty is working with all the classes in different aspects of PE. He is doing an awesome job and the children are really enjoying his classes. Thanks Tim.

Have a great week and hopefully I will see you at our Mass on Friday.

Regards,
David Macmillan, Principal.

Saint Mary ... Hut-ah-Mar-ree-ah

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Namaste,
This week we celebrate the life and work of Saint Mary Mackillop of the Cross. As a Josephite school we follow the charism of St Mary Mackillop. Her influence on our school is immense and our students all know many of her wise quotes. Students are learning about Mary Mackillop this week and revisiting her initiatives. On Friday we have Mass at 9:00am. After interval students will move around the school joining in with the many activities teachers have organised for them. After lunch we will have singing and a video in the hall before a school house chalk drawing competition!
Click on the links below to find out more about Mary Mackillop.
We pray for safe travels for Mr James and Mrs Cato and the students accompanying them to the Auckland GEG student summit- looking at creative and collaborative use of digital technologies.

CHILDREN’S PRAYER TO SAINT MARY MacKILLOP
God, who so loves us dearly,
We thank you for the life of
Saint Mary MacKillop.
She showed us how to love and
Care for each other
And how to trust you when
Everything seemed wrong.
We ask her to pray for us at this time.
May Saint Mary MacKillop
Help us to follow Jesus always.
