Newsletter No 23, 2 August 2017

Kia Ora,

The weather has been great over the last few days. A little cool, but no rain and wind to speak of.

Our first week is behind us and the reports and portfolios have gone home. I was very impressed with where our students are with their learning at this year’s mid point. The reports looked pretty good across the school.

Thanks to the Junior teachers and the effort they put into ensuring that their children’s portfolios reflected well the children’s valuable learning.

Thanks to the parents who came along to the student led conferences last night. It does give our children the opportunity to show off their work and set goals for the coming term. If you missed out on a conference, talk to your child’s teacher about scheduling another time for you to come in and look at your child’s work.

On Wednesday, five of our teachers graduated from the Academy of Collaborative Futures. The courses the staff were involved in were leadership courses: Voyager and Learning to Grow programmes. Congratulations to Leon Volschenk, Bevan James, Kate Keaney, Nicki Rowe and Michelle Ryan. Well done to you all.

Over the last few weekends Elmer Ersando and Api Waititi installed new gate posts for our gates on Ranolf St. They have done a wonderful job; thank you to you both. Elmer spent many hours at his engineering workshop making the gate posts. Thanks Elmer.

Tonight Tessa Gray from Core Education is facilitating an Internet Safety Workshop for parents/caregivers only at JPC’s Edmund Rice Centre starting at 7.00pm. The meeting will be very informative and highly recommended. The flyer about the meeting appears later in this newsletter.

On Friday we will have our Holiday Reading and raffle draw. Today was the cut off day that reading logs and raffle books needed to be returned. If you still have either of these, please return them to school as soon as possible.

We welcome Kataraina Leef, a student teacher from Wananga o Aotearoa. She is teaching in Room 5 with Karen Tabuteau. Welcome Kataraina.

We also have had two facilitators from the National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement in New Zealand. They are working with some of our Year 4 students to find out about the teaching of Science, Health and PE in our school. A number of schools in New Zealand will be surveyed too.

Your child has probably told you that Tim from Sport Bay of Plenty has been working in their class taking Physical Education lessons. Tim is working with all classes during the term.

Just a couple of things coming up that you are very welcome to join us for:

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Hello Everyone,

This week our year 6 students had the opportunity to attend a workshop on prayer and the Eucharist held by the students from the Catholic Discipleship College. The students enjoyed this mini focus. Next week we celebrate Mary Mackillop and her great work with a schoolwide focus on her mission. We will have a Mass on Friday which will be followed by a short re-enactment of Mary Mackillop’s life. Classes will then spend some time learning and revisiting the ideas, inspiration and life of Mary Mackillop and how she helped shape our school. Our year 6 students also had their JPC interviews this week, which all went well.

A reminder if you are considering having your child Baptised that there is an information evening/course held for this each first Thursday of the month. Please make contact with the Parish office.

Blessings,
Bernadette Hall-DRS

A Special Mention

We have one of our St Mary’s Mum’s up for Bride of the Year 2017.
Unfortunately, this beautiful bride didn’t get to go on a honeymoon, so let’s hope that she can win one through ‘The Rydges Bride of the Year 2017’ competition.

There are 12 brides competing in the Rydges Bride of the Year Competition on September 9. Top prize is a ‘Honeymoon’ thanks to Hello World.

St Mary’s Mum & Bride this year is Stacey Birch, it would be great for one of our hardworking mum’s to win this super prize, so if you can support her in voting for her that would be fab.

Voting for the ‘People’s Choice’ is open, click here for the link or you can vote through the More FM or Facebook Websites.
