Newsletter No 02, 14 February 2018

Dear Parents,

Hello Everyone,

We had an excellent start to the year, although I know for some children the change of routine from holiday mode to school mode has been a bit of a challenge.

Today is Ash Wednesday and in the Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is one of the most important Holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. As a school we celebrated Ash Wednesday with a liturgy over in the church. Thanks to parents who joined us for this.

Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too.
Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us.

This Friday is our Opening School Mass at St Mary's Church at 9.00am. Mass is a great way to start our year of learning, so we would appreciate your attendance if you are able to make it.

A reminder about our Christmas holiday reading programme. A number of children read lots of books over the holidays and we will be having our lucky log draw on February 20th. Children can keep reading and adding to their logs up until the cut off time of February 19th. If you have been reading stories to your child, that counts too. Just write the story on the holiday log. Please continue to support your child/children reading at home.

We have parent interviews next week, Monday and Tuesday. Feedback from parents last year was that 5 minutes was not long enough, so this year the meetings are 10 minutes. The purpose of these interviews is to hear what your aspirations are for your child and also anything else you might want to share with us about your child. A questionnaire about your child is being sent home this week and if you could fill this in and bring it to the interview that would be much appreciated.

Remember to look at your child’s class blog. Each week the blogs are updated with important class notices and class work. You can access the blogs by going to our school website: www.stmarysrotorua.school.nz or you can now access the blogs on our school phone app.

Many of our students participated in the Rotorua Realtor (Hielke Oppers) Kids colour & Activities book over the holidays. Congratulations to Leon Litten and Jono Dalton who won $100 Motor Entertainment vouchers for their entries. Thanks to Hielke for offering this opportunity to students.

Last week we had our ‘Welcome and Waitangi Day Liturgy’. Thanks to Room 4 who led the liturgy and also to parents who were able to join us.

And finally … THE COUNTDOWN IS ON ... Fifteen days to our Gala Day!!!! Thursday March 1st. This is an important date on our calendar and we need EVERYONE to help make the gala a success.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES:

Today we held our Ash Wednesday Service. Thanks to Deacon Joe for facilitating this for us. The students have prepared and decided on their Lenten promises. This Friday we will welcome all new families to our school community. So please join us if you can at this Mass. 9am St Mary's Church.
Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others.
What is Lent?

Students have already begun to take home the class prayer journals. Please add a prayer as a family and decorate the page. The journal then becomes a classroom resource students can use at prayer times.

Blessings,
