Newsletter No 01, 7 February 2018

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to all our families and children. I hope you all had a great break with your families over the holiday time.

It is great to see our children returning from holiday, rested and ready to go for a new year of learning. Thanks to our fantastic staff who have been working hard over the holidays preparing for the return of our students. I am looking forward to an exciting year. A special thanks to our two ground staff, Michelle and Jamie, who have worked hard to get our school looking tip top for the start of the year.

A special welcome to all our new children and their families. It is fantastic to have you join our large St Mary’s family and I hope you find your time with us rewarding:

A special welcome to our new staff members. Laura Phipps is teaching in Room 14, the Middle School. Laura graduated from Waikato University last year. Glenda Pedley has joined our Support Staff and she comes from Lynmore School. Glenda is a well qualified and experienced person.

Next Wednesday, WEDNESDAY 14TH FEBRUARY is Ash Wednesday and we will be holding a Liturgy in the church at 9.00am. You are most welcome to join us for this. Incidentally, it is also Valentines Day.

Our ‘start of the year’ Mass is FRIDAY 16TH FEBRUARY and it would be fantastic if you could join us. Mass is at 9.00am in our Parish Church and we particularly welcome parents of new children. For new parents, our Mass normally finishes around 9.45am.

On TUESDAY 20TH FEBRUARY starting at 3.15pm we invite you to ‘meet your child’s teacher’. This is an opportunity for you to meet and talk with the teacher for 10 minutes. Teachers would like to listen to what aspirations you have for your child this year. I will let you know when you can book an interview time with your child’s teacher.

For our new families and also a reminder to our not so new families, our behaviour management programme at St Mary’s centres around our six ‘Golden Rules’:

We are gentle
We are kind and helpful
We listen
We are honest
We work hard
We look after property

When the children follow the Golden Rules they are entitled to half an hour of Golden time on a Friday afternoon. Usually each class decides on Monday morning what that golden time will be for Friday. Children look forward to their golden time. If children choose not to follow the golden rules they can lose golden time. You could also discuss these rules with your children over the next little while, so they are getting the same message from home and school.

A number of children read lots of books over the holidays and we will be having our lucky log draw on 23 February. Children can keep reading and adding to their logs up until this cut off time. If you have been reading stories to your child, that counts too. Just write the story on the holiday log. Please continue to support your child/children reading at home.

Summer sports will be starting soon. If you want your child to play, please register as soon as possible. Registration forms will be sent home with your child/children today. Sports that are available are Flippaball (Year 3 up), Cricket (all ages) and Touch (all ages). Payment is required at the time of registration.
.
Remember to look at your child’s class blog. Links to the class blogs can be found on our school website www.stmaryrotorua.school.nz. Each week the blogs are updated with important class notices and class work.

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON ..... less than four weeks to our Gala Day, Thursday March 1st. It is an important date on our calendar and we need everyone to help make the gala a success. A newsletter from the PTA will be sent home soon outlining ways you might be able to help.

Our school has a phone app. You can download it from the Apple store or if you have an android the android store. You will be able to access newsletters, blogs, absences and sports draws. You can also subscribe so you can receive notifications from a particular sports team.

Remember, St Mary’s Catholic School has a facebook page too and photos are often posted on this page. We have 974 likes so far and would appreciate more.

Have an awesome week.
David Macmillan, Principal.
