History of the School

In 1924 our original buildings were opened under the name of St Michael's School, St Michael's being the only parish in Rotorua at that time.

The first Mass in the original St Mary's Church was held on Christmas Eve, 1954. However the School remained St Michael's until the present St Michael's was opened in 1958. Our school then became St Mary's.

The Sisters of St Joseph staffed St Mary's for many years. In 1982 St Mary's was integrated with the State system although we retain our special character.

In 1996 the Bishop bought the convent from the Sisters of St Joseph and this building now houses the administration suite, junior classrooms and the staff room - known as MacKillop Block.

In 2002 a programme for the construction of new classrooms and a new school hall was completed enhancing the environment in which the children learn.
